Demand = willingness और ability to buy, given period और price पर। Own-price change movement है; income/tastes/related-good prices का change shift है। Law of demand अन्य बातें समान रखता है; Giffen exception को Veblen/status story से न मिलाएँ।

Point Price Elasticity

Demand function दी हो तो local percentage responsiveness निकालें।

eₚ = (dQ/dP) × P/Q; magnitude के लिए |eₚ|

Worked example: Q = 80 − 2P; P = 20 → Q = 40; |eₚ| = 2 × 20/40 = 1।

Interpretation: Slope −2 है, elasticity 1; दोनों एक concept नहीं।

Midpoint Arc Elasticity

दो observations के बीच base-direction bias हटाने के लिए।

|Earc| = |(Q₂−Q₁)/(Q₂+Q₁) × (P₂+P₁)/(P₂−P₁)|

Worked example: P: 20 → 16; Q: 30 → 40 → |Earc| = (10/70) × (36/4) = 9/7 ≈ 1.29।

Interpretation: Finite interval में दोनों directions से यही midpoint estimate मिलता है।

Income and Cross Elasticities

Income response से good type, related-good price response से relationship पहचानें।

Eᵧ = %ΔQ/%Δincome; Eₓᵧ = %ΔQₓ/%ΔPᵧ

Worked example: Income +20%, Q −10% → Eᵧ = −0.5 (inferior)। Pᵧ +5%, Qₓ +10% → Eₓᵧ = +2 (substitutes)।

Interpretation: Income elasticity और own-price elasticity को interchangeable न मानें।

Elasticity / eventInterpretation
|Eₚ| > 1; price fallsTR rises
|Eₚ| < 1; price risesTR rises
|Eₚ| = 1Local TR unchanged at revenue maximum; finite arc case depends on interval
Eᵧ > 1 / 0 < Eᵧ < 1 / Eᵧ < 0Luxury / normal necessity / inferior
Eₓᵧ > 0 / < 0 / ≈ 0Substitutes / complements / unrelated

Concept of Equilibrium

Market equilibrium में Qd = Qs; price पर excess demand/supply zero है। Stable equilibrium में छोटा displacement corrective adjustment पैदा करता है। Qd = 100 − 2P, Qs = 20 + 2P → 4P = 80 → P = 20, Q = 60। P = 15 पर shortage 20 units है; competitive adjustment में price पर upward pressure होगा।

Straight demand line का upper part elastic, midpoint unit-elastic और lower part inelastic; near substitutes, budget share, necessity/luxury और adjustment time responsiveness को प्रभावित करते हैं।

Q = 20 − 0.2P. Straight-line slope constant है, लेकिन point elasticity changes along the line.Demand|e| = 1ElasticInelastic0Quantity QPrice P
Q = 20 − 0.2P. Straight-line slope constant है, लेकिन point elasticity changes along the line.

Active Recall / Writing Practice

  1. Demand movement बनाम shift के चार examples लिखें।
  2. Demand curve पर elastic–unit–inelastic parts और TR relation label करें।

Notes बन्द करके लिखें। Review: next day, third day और seventh day; पढ़ लेना mastery का proof नहीं।

Memory recap: Concept चुनें: own price, income या cross price? फिर सही denominator लें।
