Keynes’s Liquidity Preference Theory

Keynes interest को कुछ समय के लिए liquidity छोड़ने का reward मानते हैं; केवल saving करना interest की guarantee नहीं। The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936) इस approach की प्रमुख book है।
| Motive | Reason | Main textbook determinant |
|---|---|---|
| Transactions | Regular household/business payments | Income/activity |
| Precautionary | Unexpected needs | Income/uncertainty |
| Speculative | Cash vs bonds; future rate/price expectations | Interest rate, inverse demand |
Money-Market Equilibrium
Given income पर liquidity preference और exogenous money stock से rate निकालें।
Worked example: Md = 240 − 20r, Ms = 120 → 20r = 120 → r = 6%।
Interpretation: Money demand curve downward, fixed money supply vertical—axes में rate vertical और money horizontal।
Perpetual Fixed-Coupon Bond Value
Perpetuity में rate बदलने पर bond-price relation को numerical रूप दें।
Worked example: Coupon = 120, yield = 6% → price = 120/0.06 = 2000।
Interpretation: यह perpetuity formula है; finite maturity bond में repayment present value भी आती है।
- Money supply ↑; income/LP unchanged → rate falls, outside liquidity trap। Liquidity preference ↑ at fixed money supply → rate rises।
- Bond prices और yields inverse हैं। Current rate बहुत low relative to expected future rates हो तो expected bond-price losses cash demand बढ़ा सकते हैं।
- Liquidity trap: very low rate पर speculative money demand highly elastic; extra money lower rate कराने में weak हो सकती है।
- Limitations: basic account income given रखकर rate समझाता है; real investment/saving, expectations और other assets को richer analysis चाहिए।
Active Recall / Writing Practice
- Fixed money supply/LP graph बनाकर supply increase का effect दिखाएँ।
- Transactions–precautionary–speculative के one example each लिखें।

Memory recap: Interest rewards liquidity surrender; cash–bond choice expectations से जुड़ी है।
