History of English Literature: Ages & Periods को समझने का आसान तरीका है: Age → पहचान → Writer → Work।
| Age | Approx. period | पहचान | Memory anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old English / Anglo-Saxon | c. 450–1066 | Heroism, loyalty, religion | Beowulf |
| Middle English | 1066–c. 1500 | Pilgrims, romance, medieval society | Chaucer |
| Renaissance / Early Modern | c. 1500–1660 | Humanism, drama, sonnets | Shakespeare |
| Neoclassical | 1660–c. 1798 | Reason, order, wit, satire | Dryden, Pope, Johnson |
| Romantic | c. 1798–1837 | Nature, emotion, imagination | Wordsworth, Coleridge |
| Victorian | 1837–1901 | Society, industry, faith and doubt | Tennyson, Dickens |
| Early twentieth century | c. 1901–1945 | Modernist experiment, inner life | Eliot, Woolf, Joyce |
| Post-war and later writing | 1945 onwards | Varied voices, identity, experiment | Beckett, Pinter |
2. Old English:
- Beowulf → anonymous heroic epic; writer
- Cædmon → Cædmon’s Hymn
याद रखें: Old English = Beowulf, Chaucer नहीं।
- Geoffrey Chaucer → The Canterbury Tales:
- William Langland → Piers Plowman: allegorical dream vision।
The Canterbury Tales इसका अच्छा example है।
Renaissance = rebirth.
- William Shakespeare → Hamlet, Macbeth.
- Christopher Marlowe → Doctor Faustus.
- Edmund Spenser → The Faerie Queene.
- John Donne → Metaphysical poetry; clever, surprising comparisons यानी conceits।
Sub-period order: Elizabethan → Jacobean → Caroline → Commonwealth/Interregnum.
Writer की literary tradition और work की publication date दोनों देखें।
- Alexander Pope → The Rape of the Lock, a mock-epic:
- Jonathan Swift → Gulliver’s Travels.
- Samuel Johnson → A Dictionary of the English Language (1755).
Broad sequence: Restoration → Augustan → Age of Johnson/Sensibility.
Heroic couplet: rhyming iambic pentameter की दो lines; rhyme pattern aa।
- William Wordsworth + S. T. Coleridge → Lyrical Ballads (1798).
- Wordsworth → nature and ordinary life; Coleridge → supernatural imagination.
- Byron, Shelley, Keats → commonly grouped as second-generation Romantic poets.
- Keats → “Ode to a Nightingale”; Shelley → “Ode to the West Wind”.
- Poets → Tennyson, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold.
- Novelists → Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy.
- Works → Dickens: Oliver Twist; Charlotte Brontë: Jane Eyre.
Confusion: Wordsworth = Romantic; Tennyson = Victorian.
- T. S. Eliot → The Waste Land (1922).
- James Joyce → Ulysses; Virginia Woolf → Mrs Dalloway.
- Samuel Beckett → Waiting for Godot; Theatre of the Absurd
10. Last-minute revision
Five anchors: 1066 = Norman Conquest; 1660 = Restoration; 1798 = Lyrical Ballads; 1837 = Victoria’s accession; 1922 = The Waste Land and Ulysses.
