Geoffrey Chaucer & The Canterbury Tales: Chaucer Chaucer → Middle English → Pilgrims → Stories → Medieval society.
1. Chaucer
- Life: c. 1343–1400; birth year
- Age and language: Fourteenth-century Middle English literature; Old English या Shakespeare वाली Early Modern English नहीं।
- Traditional title: “Father of English Poetry”;
- Other roles: Court service, diplomacy और customs administration.
2. Major works:
Dates नीचे estimated composition dates हैं, first printing dates नहीं।
| Work | Approx. composition |
|---|---|---|
| The Book of the Duchess | c. 1369–1372 | Dream vision; Blanche of Lancaster |
| The House of Fame | c. 1378–1381 | Dream vision; fame, reports और authority; unfinished. |
| The Parliament of Fowls | c. 1380–1382 | Dream vision; birds, love और choice. |
| Troilus and Criseyde | c. 1382–1386 | Troy में tragic love story; five books; rhyme royal. |
| The Legend of Good Women | c. 1386 onwards | Women faithful in love; unfinished collection. |
| The Canterbury Tales | Late 1380s–1400 | Pilgrimage के frame में tales; unfinished. |
| A Treatise on the Astrolabe | c. 1391 | Scientific prose; astronomical instrument समझाने वाला work. |
Extra connections: Boece = Boethius की Consolation of Philosophy का translation. Troilus and Criseyde का important source = Boccaccio’s Il Filostrato.
Memory chain: Duchess = grief; Fame = reputation; Fowls = birds; Troilus = tragic love; Tales = pilgrims; Astrolabe = astronomy.
3. The Canterbury Tales
- Meeting place: Tabard Inn, Southwark, London
- Host: Harry Bailly; Harry Bailey spelling
Becket ≠ Beckett: Thomas Becket medieval saint हैं; Samuel Beckett twentieth-century playwright हैं।
- Usual projected total = 30 × 4 = 120 tales.
Exam rule: Question में “planned”, “surviving”, “excluding narrator” या “including narrator” ध्यान से पढ़ें।
5. General Prologue: characters की gallery
General Prologue = 858 lines.
| Character |
|---|---|
| Knight | Chivalry और military experience; first tale सुनाता है। |
| Squire | Knight का young son; love, music और courtly accomplishments. |
| Prioress | Madame Eglentyne; refined manners और fashionable gentility. |
| Monk | Hunting और comfortable life में interest. |
| Friar | Huberd; worldly social connections और profit. |
| Oxford Clerk | Poor scholar; learning और teaching को महत्व. |
| Wife of Bath | Alisoun; five husbands; marriage में experience और authority. |
| Parson | Sincere pastoral duty; अच्छे religious conduct का example. |
| Plowman | Parson का brother; honest work और charity. |
6. Important tales: one-line connections
- Knight’s Tale: Palamon और Arcite का Emelye के लिए love rivalry; chivalric romance.
- Miller’s Tale: Comic deception; fabliau यानी short, earthy comic narrative.
- Wife of Bath’s Tale: Women की sovereignty और marriage में authority का question.
- Pardoner’s Tale: Three rioters, gold
- Nun’s Priest’s Tale: Chanticleer, Pertelote और fox; beast fable.
- Parson’s Tale: Penitence पर prose religious discourse.
- Rhyme royal: Seven iambic pentameter lines का stanza; pattern ababbcc.
8. Exam traps और final revision
- Chaucer = Middle English; “first-ever English poet”
Canterbury Tales.
- c. 1387 = composition landmark; first printing by William Caxton = 1476.
- Host = Harry Bailly; author/narrator = Chaucer.
- Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde को Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida से अलग रखें।
One-minute recall: Middle English → Tabard → Canterbury → Harry → 29 + narrator → 120 planned / 24 surviving → 858-line Prologue → 1476 printing.
