Syllabus connection: Uploaded UGC NET syllabus के Unit 1 में Theory of Consumer Behaviour और mathematical syllabus में optimization है। UP PGT में utility, indifference curves, demand और consumer behaviour हैं।
Dual: e(p,ū)=min p·x, subject to u(x)≥ū, x≥0। Choice h(p,ū) = Hicksian demand।
Assumptions: Positive prices, continuous preferences/utility, feasible target और stable tastes।
| Economist / year | Publication | Exam connection |
|---|---|---|
English title: On the Theory of the Budget of the Consumer। |
| J. R. Hicks + R. G. D. Allen — 1934 | A Reconsideration of the Theory of Value, Economica; Part I, February; Part II, May | Ordinal demand analysis और substitution-based consumer theory का development। |
| J. R. Hicks — 1939 | Value and Capital, Clarendon Press / Oxford | Ordinal theory, income–substitution analysis, consumer choice का systematic treatment। |
| René Roy — 1942 | De l’utilité: contribution à la théorie des choix, Hermann | Roy’s Identity से indirect utility के derivatives द्वारा Marshallian demand। यह standard textbook association है; सभी earlier mathematical precursors का “first inventor” दावा नहीं। |
| Ronald W. Shephard — 1953 | Cost and Production Functions, Princeton University Press | Duality और Shephard’s Lemma; consumer version में expenditure derivative से Hicksian demand। Theory of Cost and Production Functions अलग later book है। |
| Irving Fisher — 1930 | The Theory of Interest, Macmillan; subtitle: As Determined by Impatience to Spend Income and Opportunity to Invest It | Present–future choice, impatience और investment opportunities; two-period model की प्रमुख historical association। |
| Paul A. Samuelson — 1937 | A Note on Measurement of Utility, Review of Economic Studies 4(2), 155–161 | Discounted-utility framework की महत्वपूर्ण early formulation। |
Memory trick: Slutsky 15, Fisher 30, Hicks–Allen 34, Samuelson discounting 37, Hicks book 39, Roy 42, Shephard 53। Roy → ordinary demand; Shephard → spending derivative → compensated demand।
3. Duality — same optimum, different question ⭐
| Compare | Utility maximization | Expenditure minimization |
|---|---|---|
| क्या fixed? | Prices + income m | Prices + target utility ū |
| Objective | Maximum utility | Minimum expenditure |
| Choice / value | x(p,m) / v(p,m) | h(p,ū) / e(p,ū) |
| Demand interpretation | Ordinary / Marshallian | Compensated / Hicksian |
| Scale all prices | Income भी scale करें तो choice unchanged | Target unchanged हो तो expenditure same proportion से बढ़े; Hicksian bundle unchanged |
e(p,v(p,m))=m; v(p,e(p,ū))=ū।
h(p,v(p,m))=x(p,m); x(p,e(p,ū))=h(p,ū)।
- e: prices में degree 1: e(tp,ū)=t e(p,ū)।
h: prices में degree 0, target utility fixed।
4. Roy’s Identity, Shephard’s Lemma और multipliers ⭐
Shephard: hᵢ(p,ū)=∂e(p,ū)/∂pᵢ, wherever the expenditure function is differentiable।
Budget adding-up: Σpᵢxᵢ=m; Σpᵢhᵢ=e(p,ū) (Euler’s theorem for degree 1 e)।
Lagrangian समझें: Primal L=u(x)+λ(m−p·x), इसलिए ∂v/∂m=λ और ∂v/∂pᵢ=−λxᵢ। Dual L=p·x+μ(ū−u(x)), इसलिए ∂e/∂ū=μ।
5. Frequently asked utility functions — पहले type पहचानें
| Utility / conditions | Marshallian + v | Expenditure + Hicksian |
|---|---|---|
| u=XᵃY¹⁻ᵃ, 0<a<1 | X=am/pₓ; Y=(1−a)m/pᵧ। v=m aᵃ(1−a)¹⁻ᵃ/(pₓᵃpᵧ¹⁻ᵃ) | e=ū pₓᵃpᵧ¹⁻ᵃ/[aᵃ(1−a)¹⁻ᵃ]; hₓ=ae/pₓ; hᵧ=(1−a)e/pᵧ |
| u=√XY (a=½) | X=m/(2pₓ); Y=m/(2pᵧ); v=m/(2√pₓpᵧ) | e=2ū√pₓpᵧ; hₓ=ū√(pᵧ/pₓ); hᵧ=ū√(pₓ/pᵧ) |
| u=XY | Same demand as √XY; v=m²/(4pₓpᵧ) | e=2√(ū pₓpᵧ); target ū is product-scale utility |
| u=aX+bY, a,b>0 | Compare a/pₓ with b/pᵧ। Better utility per rupee वाले good पर खर्च। Tie: multiple optima | e=ū min{pₓ/a,pᵧ/b}; choose cheaper utility-producing good |
| u=min{X,kY}, k>0 | X=kY; X=m/(pₓ+pᵧ/k); Y=X/k | e=ū(pₓ+pᵧ/k); hₓ=ū; hᵧ=ū/k |
| u=lnX+Y, pᵧ=1, Y≥0 | If m≥1: X=1/pₓ, Y=m−1; v=−lnpₓ+m−1। If 0<m<1: X=m/pₓ,Y=0 | Interior target: e=ū+1+lnpₓ, hₓ=1/pₓ, hᵧ=ū+lnpₓ; requires ū+lnpₓ≥0। Lower target: corner Y=0, X=exp(ū), e=pₓexp(ū) |
6. Compensation, Slutsky equation और matrix restrictions ⭐
Hicks compensation: old utility ū₀ बनाएँ; compensated income e(p¹,ū₀)। Slutsky compensation: old bundle की purchasing power रखें; compensated income p¹·x⁰।
Recover substitution: Sᵢⱼ=∂hᵢ/∂pⱼ=∂xᵢ/∂pⱼ+xⱼ∂xᵢ/∂m, evaluated at ū=v(p,m)।
Elasticities: εᴴᵢⱼ=εᴹᵢⱼ+sⱼηᵢ; sⱼ=pⱼxⱼ/m, ηᵢ=(m/xᵢ)∂xᵢ/∂m।
- Own compensated effect: Sᵢᵢ≤0। Normal good का income term ordinary slope को more negative करता है; inferior good में opposite effect हो सकता है। Giffen तभी जब ordinary own slope positive हो; compensated slope positive नहीं हो जाता।
- Gross vs net: Marshallian cross effect gross substitution/complementarity है; Hicksian cross effect net है।
- Slutsky matrix: e twice differentiable हो तो S=price Hessian of e। इसलिए symmetric, negative semidefinite और Sp=0। aᵀSa≤0 for every vector a।
- Adding-up: Σpᵢ∂xᵢ/∂m=1 ⇒ Σsᵢηᵢ=1। Demand homogeneity ⇒ Σⱼεᴹᵢⱼ+ηᵢ=0। Prices के weighted derivatives वाला equivalent: Σⱼpⱼ∂xᵢ/∂pⱼ+m∂xᵢ/∂m=0।
CV / EV signs — यहाँ positive loss/gain convention
| Price change, fixed income m | CV | EV |
|---|---|---|
| Rise; ū₀ old utility, ū₁ new utility | Loss=e(p¹,ū₀)−m | Loss=m−e(p⁰,ū₁) |
| Fall | Gain=m−e(p¹,ū₀) | Gain=e(p⁰,ū₁)−m |
Quasilinear interior region में affected good का income effect zero हो तो corresponding money welfare measures coincide कर सकते हैं।
s=y₁−c₁: s>0 saver, s<0 borrower। Deterministic two-period model में same real borrowing/lending rate r, no initial assets, no taxes, no bequest और unrestricted credit मानें, जब तक question कुछ और न कहे। R=1+r, R>0।
Present value: c₁+c₂/R = y₁+y₂/R = W।
Future value: Rc₁+c₂=Ry₁+y₂।
Horizontal intercept W; vertical intercept RW; budget slope −R; line endowment (y₁,y₂)
Euler condition — interior optimum पर
u′(c₁)=βR u′(c₂); MRS₁₂=u′(c₁)/[βu′(c₂)]=R।
β=1/(1+ρ), जहाँ ρ subjective discount rate है।
Log: u(c)=lnc ⇒ c₂=βR c₁; c₁=W/(1+β), c₂=βR W/(1+β)।
CRRA: u′(c)=c−σ, σ>0 ⇒ c₂/c₁=(βR)1/σ; EIS=1/σ। Given g=(βR)1/σ: c₁=W/(1+g/R), c₂=gc₁।
CRRA utility: c1−σ/(1−σ) for σ≠1; log for σ=1। βR>1 ⇒ growing consumption; βR=1 ⇒ equal consumption; βR<1 ⇒ declining consumption, under this unrestricted interior model।
No borrowing: c₁≤y₁।
पहले question पढ़कर model पहचानें, फिर Given → Formula → numbered Solution → Final Answer → Text Explanation।
Numericals 1–8: Demand, Roy, Shephard and Duality
Numerical 1: Cobb–Douglas demand: पूरा equilibrium निकालें
प्रश्न (Question): u(X,Y)=√XY, pₓ=₹4, pᵧ=₹1 और income₹80 है। Optimal X,Y, utility और marginal utility of income निकालिए।
(Given): p=(4,1), m=80; both goods desirable; smooth interior Cobb–Douglas preferences।
MRS=Y/X=pₓ/pᵧ; budget 4X+Y=80; v=m/(2√pₓpᵧ); λ=∂v/∂m।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: MUₓ=(½)√(Y/X), MUᵧ=(½)√(X/Y), इसलिए MUₓ/MUᵧ=Y/X।
- Step 2: Y/X=4/1 ⇒ Y=4X। Budget में substitute करें:4X+4X=80।
- Step 3: 8X=80 ⇒ X=10; Y=40। दोनों positive हैं; expenditure 4×10+40=80।
- Step 4: u=√(10×40)=20; v=80/(2√4)=20।
- Step 5: λ=1/(2√4)=¼=0.25 utility-index units per extra rupee।
उत्तर (Final Answer): X*=10, Y*=40, v=20, λ=¼।
Numerical 2: Unequal exponents: income shares
प्रश्न (Question): u=X^(1/3)Y^(2/3), pₓ=3,pᵧ=2,m=90। Marshallian demand और indirect utility value निकालिए।
(Given): a=⅓, 1−a=⅔; prices positive।
X=am/pₓ; Y=(1−a)m/pᵧ; v=u(X*,Y*)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 2: X=30/3=10; Y=60/2=30।
- Step 3: Budget check:3×10+2×30=30+60=90।
- Step 4: v=10^(1/3)×30^(2/3)=10×3^(2/3)≈20.8008।
उत्तर (Final Answer): X*=10,Y*=30; v=10×3^(2/3)≈20.8008।
Numerical 3: Roy’s Identity: indirect utility से demand
प्रश्न (Question): v(pₓ,pᵧ,m)=m/(2√pₓpᵧ) दिया है। pₓ=4,pᵧ=1,m=80 पर Roy’s Identity से X निकालिए।
(Given): v=m/(2√pₓpᵧ); differentiate with the other arguments fixed।
X=−v_pₓ/v_m; v_m=1/(2√pₓpᵧ); v_pₓ=−m/(4pₓ^(3/2)√pᵧ)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Income derivative:v_m=1/(2√4)=¼।
- Step 2: Price derivative:v_pₓ=−80/(4×4^(3/2)×1)=−80/32=−2.5।
x(tp,tm)=x(p,m); v(tp,tm)=v(p,m)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: New budget 12X+3Y=240 को3 से divide करें:4X+Y=80। Feasible bundles same हैं।
- Step 2: X_new=240/(2×12)=10; Y_new=240/(2×3)=40।
- Step 3: v_new=240/(2√(12×3))=240/12=20।
- Step 4: Old values X=10,Y=40,v=20 से compare करें: कोई real choice change नहीं।
Numerical 5: Expenditure minimization: target utility की cost
दिया गया (Given): TargetXY≥400; pₓ=4,pᵧ=1; utility target attainable।
e=2ū√pₓpᵧ; hₓ=ū√(pᵧ/pₓ); hᵧ=ū√(pₓ/pᵧ); μ=e_ū।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: hₓ=20√(1/4)=10; hᵧ=20√(4/1)=40।
- Step 2: Target check:√(10×40)=20।
- Step 3: Minimum cost e=4×10+40=80; alternatively 2×20×√4=80।
- Step 4: μ=2√4=4 money units per utility-index unit।
- Step 5: Corresponding primal λ=¼; λμ=(¼)×4=1।
μ और λ reciprocal corresponding optimum और same utility representation पर हैं।
Numerical 6: Shephard’s Lemma: expenditure से compensated quantity
प्रश्न (Question): e(p,ū)=2ū√pₓpᵧ है। Prices(9,1),targetū=12 पर hₓ,hᵧ और total cost निकालिए।
दिया गया (Given): Target utility 12; prices 9 और1; e smooth at positive prices।
hₓ=e_pₓ=ū√(pᵧ/pₓ); hᵧ=e_pᵧ=ū√(pₓ/pᵧ)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: pₓ के respect में derivative: e_pₓ=12√(1/9)=4।
- Step 2: pᵧ के respect में derivative: e_pᵧ=12√9=36।
- Step 3: Cost=9×4+1×36=72।
- Step 4: Utility check:√(4×36)=12, target exactly achieved।
उत्तर (Final Answer): hₓ=4,hᵧ=36; e=₹72।
Numerical 7: Duality identities: two-way verification
प्रश्न (Question): u=√XY,p=(9,4),m=120। Verify e(p,v(p,m))=m और h(p,v(p,m))=x(p,m)।
दिया गया (Given): √(pₓpᵧ)=√36=6।
v=m/(2√pₓpᵧ); e(p,ū)=2ū√pₓpᵧ; h(p,ū)=(ū√(pᵧ/pₓ),ū√(pₓ/pᵧ))।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: v=120/(2×6)=10।
- Step 3: hₓ=10√(4/9)=20/3; hᵧ=10√(9/4)=15।
- Step 4: Marshallian X=120/18=20/3; Y=120/8=15। Demands coincide।
- Step 5: Reverse value:v(p,e)=120/12=10=ū।
प्रश्न (Question): Same preferences को u₁=√XY और u₂=XY से represent किया गया। p=(4,1),m=80 पर demands,utility labels और equivalent target की expenditure compare करें।
(Given): u₂=(u₁)² is strictly increasing for nonnegative u₁।
Common demand=(m/(2pₓ),m/(2pᵧ)); e₁=2ū₁√pₓpᵧ; e₂=2√(ū₂pₓpᵧ)।
हल (Solution):
Numericals 9–13: Substitutes, Complements and Corners
Numerical 9: Perfect substitutes: corner solution
प्रश्न (Question): u=2X+Y,pₓ=3,pᵧ=2,m=24।
दिया गया (Given): Utility per unit:X=2,Y=1; goods perfect substitutes।
Compare MUₓ/pₓ=2/3 with MUᵧ/pᵧ=1/2; e=ū min{pₓ/2,pᵧ}।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: 2/3>1/2 ⇒ X more utility per rupee
- Step 2: पूरा income X पर:X=24/3=8,Y=0। Utility 2×8=16।
- Step 3: Cost per unit utility:X=3/2=1.5,Y=2। Minimum 1.5 चुनें।
- Step 4: e(target 16)=16×1.5=24; h=(8,0)।
Numerical 10: Price tie: multiple demands और derivative trap
(Given): Both goods give 1 utility per unit और price 2; X,Y≥0।
Budget: 2X+2Y=20 ⇒ X+Y=10; e(p,10)=10min{pₓ,pᵧ}।
हल (Solution):
- Step 5: Hicksian demand at tie: hₓ∈[0,10],hᵧ=10−hₓ।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Multiple optima; e_pₓ undefined at price tie, unique hₓ नहीं।
प्रश्न (Question): u=min{X,2Y},p=(4,2),m=60। X,Y,utility और expenditure function निकालिए।
(Given): Useful matching condition X=2Y; excess of only one good utility नहीं बढ़ाता।
e(p,ū)=ū(pₓ+pᵧ/2); X=m/(pₓ+pᵧ/2); Y=X/2।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Target matching से Y=X/2। Budget 4X+2(X/2)=5X=60।
- Step 2: X=12,Y=6; utilitymin{12,12}=12।
- Step 3: e(p,ū)=ū(4+2/2)=5ū। Target 12 पर e=60।
- Step 4: hₓ=ū=12,hᵧ=ū/2=6; expenditure 4×12+2×6=60।
(Final Answer): X=12,Y=6,u=12; e(p,ū)=5ū at these prices।
Numerical 12: Quasilinear utility: interior और zero income effect
प्रश्न (Question): u=ln X+Y,pₓ=2,pᵧ=1,m=10।
(Given): X>0,Y≥0; income 10 is enough to buy interior X demand।
Interior:MRS=(1/X)/1=pₓ ⇒ X=1/pₓ; Y=m−1; v=m−1−ln pₓ; e(p,ū)=ū+1+ln pₓ।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: MRS=1/X=2 ⇒ X=½। X cost 2×½=1।
- Step 2: बाकी income Y पर:Y=10−1=9। Both quantities feasible हैं।
- Step 3: v=ln(½)+9=9−ln 2≈8.3069।
- Step 4: Target ū=9−ln 2 की e=(9−ln 2)+1+ln 2=10। Hicksian Y=ū+ln 2=9≥0।
- Step 5: Interior region में ∂X/∂m=0; extra income Y में जाता है।
उत्तर (Final Answer): X=½,Y=9,v=9−ln 2; e=₹10।
Numerical 13: Quasilinear low income: interior shortcut fail
दिया गया (Given): Income₹0.5; nonnegativityY≥0; interior desired X=½ costs₹1।
If 0<m<1: corner Y=0,X=m/pₓ; v=ln(m/pₓ)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Interior guess X=½,Y=−½ देता है। Negative Y feasible नहीं।
- Step 2: Budget सेY=½−2X, इसलिए0<X≤¼। Utility f(X)=ln X+½−2X।
- Step 3: f′(X)=1/X−2; feasible range X≤¼ में derivative≥4−2=2>0।
- Step 4: Utility increasing है, इसलिए endpoint X=¼,Y=0 चुनें।
- Step 5: v=ln(¼)=−ln 4≈−1.3863। Target के corner expenditure 2exp(v)=2×¼=½।
उत्तर (Final Answer): X=¼,Y=0; v−ln 4।
Numericals 14–17: Compensation and Welfare
Numerical 14: Hicks price fall: substitution और income effects
(Given): Old pₓ=4; new pₓ=1; fixed actual income 80।
A=x(p⁰,m); H=h(p¹,u₀); B=x(p¹,m); SE=Hₓ−Aₓ; IE=Bₓ−Hₓ।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Old A=(10,40), u₀=20। New actual B=(40,40),u₁=40।
- Step 2: Hicks income e(new,u₀)=2×20√1=40। H=(20,20),utility 20 exactly।
- Step 3: SE=20−10=+10; IE=40−20=+20; total 40−10=+30。
- Step 4: Slutsky income=new prices·A=1×10+1×40=50। Its choiceS=(25,25),utility 25।
- Step 5: Slutsky SE=25−10=15,IE=40−25=15; both methods total
उत्तर (Final Answer): Hicks:SE+10,IE+20,TE+30; H20,20। Slutsky:S25,25।
Numerical 15: Hicks price rise: negative effects का decomposition
(Given): Old prices(1,1); new prices(4,1); fixed income 80।
H=h(p¹,u₀); SE=Hₓ−Aₓ; IE=Bₓ−Hₓ।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Old A=(40,40), u₀=40। New actual B=(10,40),u₁=20।
- Step 2: Old utility 40 maintain करने की new price cost e=2×40√4=160।
- Step 3: Compensated Hₓ=40√(1/4)=20; Hᵧ=40√4=80; utility√1600=40।
- Step 4: SE=20−40=−20; IE=10−20=−10।
- Step 5: Total X change 10−40=−30; −20−10=−30 verified।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Hicks H=(20,80),SE−20,IE−10,TE−30।
Numerical 16: Price-rise welfare loss: CV और EV
(Given): Old utility u₀=40; new utility u₁=20; actual income 80।
CV_loss=e(p¹,u₀)−m; EV_loss=m−e(p⁰,u₁); e=2ū√pₓpᵧ।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: New prices पर old utility की cost e(p¹,40)=2×40×2=160।
- Step 2: CV_loss=160−80=80। इतनी extra income price rise के बाद old satisfaction restore करेगी।
- Step 3: Old prices पर new utility की cost e(p⁰,20)=2×20×1=40।
- Step 4: EV_loss=80−40=40। Old prices पर₹40 लेना consumer को new lower satisfaction तक लाएगा।
उत्तर (Final Answer): CV loss₹80; EV loss₹40।
Numerical 17: Price-fall welfare gain: sign convention
प्रश्न (Question): u=√XY,m=80,pᵧ=1,pₓ=4→1।
(Given): Old utility 20,new utility 40; income unchanged 80।
CV_gain=m−e(p¹,u₀); EV_gain=e(p⁰,u₁)−m।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: New prices पर old utility 20 की e=2×20×1=40।
- Step 2: CV_gain=80−40=40।
- Step 3: Old prices पर new utility 40 की e=2×40×2=160।
- Step 4: EV_gain=160−80=80। Old prices पर इतनी extra money new utility दिलाती।
उत्तर (Final Answer): CV gain₹40; EV gain₹80।
Numericals 18–24: Slutsky Matrix and Elasticity Restrictions
Numerical 18: Slutsky own-price derivative और elasticities
दिया गया (Given): X=10,Y=40; X=m/(2pₓ); ∂X/∂m=1/(2pₓ)=⅛।
Sₓₓ=X_pₓ+X X_m; εᴹₓₓ=(pₓ/X)X_pₓ; εᴴₓₓ=(pₓ/X)Sₓₓ।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Ordinary derivativeX_pₓ=−m/(2pₓ²)=−80/32=−2.5।
- Step 2: Income correctionX X_m=10×⅛=1.25।
- Step 3: Compensated Sₓₓ=−2.5+1.25=−1.25।
- Step 4: Ordinary elasticity(4/10)×(−2.5)=−1। Compensated elasticity(4/10)×(−1.25)=−½।
- Step 5: Income elasticity ηₓ=(80/10)×⅛=1; share sₓ=4×10/80=½। Check εᴴ=−1+½×1=−½।
Numerical 19: Gross independence, लेकिन net substitutes
दिया गया (Given): X=10,Y=40; X_m=⅛,Y_m=½; ordinary cross derivatives दोनों0।
Sₓᵧ=X_pᵧ+Y X_m; Sᵧₓ=Y_pₓ+X Y_m।
हल (Solution):
- Step 2: Sₓᵧ=0+40×⅛=5। Changed price good Y की quantity 40 use हुई।
Sᵧₓ=0+10×½=5।
- Step 4: Compensated cross effects equal 5 और positive हैं। Ordinary effects 0 हैं।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Gross price independence; net substitution; Sₓᵧ=Sᵧₓ=5।
Numerical 20: Actual Slutsky matrix: symmetry, NSD और singularity
प्रश्न (Question): u=√XY,p=(4,1),m=80 की Slutsky matrix बनाकर symmetry,negative semidefiniteness और Sp=0 जाँचिए।
दिया गया (Given): Targetu=v=20; hₓ=u√(pᵧ/pₓ),hᵧ=u√(pₓ/pᵧ)।
S=Hessian_p e; for 2×2 symmetric S, nonpositive diagonal + determinant≥0 ⇒ NSD।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Sₓₓ=−1.25,Sₓᵧ=5,Sᵧₓ=5,Sᵧᵧ=−u√pₓ/(2pᵧ^(3/2))=−20।
- Step 2: S=[[-5/4,5],[5,−20]]। Off-diagonals equal, इसलिए symmetric।
- Step 3: Determinant(−5/4)(−20)−25=25−25=0; दोनों diagonals negative। इसलिए NSD।
- Step 4: Sp: first row(−5/4)×4+5×1=0; second 5×4−20×1=0।
- Step 5: Eigenvalues 0 और trace=−85/4=−21.25। Direction a=(1,2) पर aᵀSa=−5/4+20−80=−245/4=−61.25≤0।
उत्तर (Final Answer): S symmetric, NSD, singular; Sp=0; eigenvalues 0 और−21.25।
All prices proportionately बदलें तो Hicksian quantities unchanged हैं।
Numerical 21: Negative diagonal alone
दिया गया (Given): Matrix symmetric और own terms negative हैं।
NSD requires aᵀSa≤0 every a; Sp=0 is compensated homogeneity condition।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Determinant 4−9=−5<0।
- Step 2: a=(1,1) लें: aᵀSa=−2+3+3−2=2>0। Direct violation।
Numerical 22: Local integrability restrictions: सही candidate
(Given): Two-good local compensated derivative matrix।
Check symmetry, nonpositive diagonals, determinant≥0 और Sp=0।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Offdiagonals 2=2 ⇒ symmetry। Diagonals−1,−4≤0।
- Step 2: Determinant 4−4=0; eigenvalues 0 और−5 ⇒ NSD।
- Step 3: Sp: −1×2+2×1=0; 2×2−4×1=0।
Numerical 23: Engel aggregation: unknown income elasticity
प्रश्न (Question): Two goods के budget shares sₓ=¼,sᵧ=¾ और X की income elasticity ηₓ=1.4 है।
दिया गया (Given): sₓ=0.25,sᵧ=0.75,ηₓ=7/5; prices fixed।
Σsᵢηᵢ=1 ⇒ sₓηₓ+sᵧηᵧ=1।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: X contribution=(¼)×(7/5)=7/20=0.35।
- Step 2: Y contribution 1−7/20=13/20=0.65।
- Step 3: ηᵧ=(13/20)/(¾)=13/15≈0.8667।
- Step 4: Check 0.25×1.4+0.75×0.866666…=0.35+0.65=1।
(Final Answer): ηᵧ=13/15≈0.8667; Y normal necessity in this local elasticity sense।
Numerical 24: Elasticity homogeneity और gross/net classification
प्रश्न (Question): X की ordinary own elasticity−0.8,income elasticity 1.2,और Y budget share 0.6 है। Two-good demand homogeneous degree 0 है। Ordinary cross और compensated cross elasticities निकालिए।
दिया गया (Given): εᴹₓₓ−4/5,ηₓ=6/5,sᵧ=3/5; sₓ=2/5। Quantities positive।
εᴹₓₓ+εᴹₓᵧ+ηₓ=0; εᴴₓᵧ=εᴹₓᵧ+sᵧηₓ।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Homogeneity
- Step 2: Income compensation term 0.6×1.2=0.72।
- Step 3: εᴴₓᵧ=−0.4+0.72=+0.32।
- Step 4: Own compensated elasticity−0.8+0.4×1.2=−0.32। Compensated row sum−0.32+0.32=0।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Ordinary cross−0.4: gross complements। Compensated cross+0.32: net substitutes।
Numericals 25–30: Intertemporal Choice, Saving and Borrowing
Numerical 25: Intertemporal budget: saving का future effect
(Given): R=1.1=11/10; equal borrowing/lending rates; no initial assets।
W=y₁+y₂/R; c₂=y₂+R(y₁−c₁); s=y₁−c₁।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Future income का PV 110/1.1=100; W=100+100=200।
- Step 2: Horizontal intercept c₁max 200; vertical intercept c₂maxR W=1.1×200=220। Slope−1.1।
- Step 3: c₁=80 ⇒ saving 100−80=20।
- Step 4: Future consumption 110+1.1×20=132। PV check 80+132/1.1=80+120=200।
उत्तर (Final Answer): W=200,intercepts(200,0),(0,220),slope−1.1; s=20,c₂=132।
Numerical 26: Log utility: complete two-period optimum
प्रश्न (Question): U=ln c₁+0.9ln c₂,y₁=100,y₂=110,r10%। Optimal consumptions और saving/borrowing step-by-step निकालिए।
दिया गया (Given): β=9/10,R=11/10,W=100+110/(11/10)=200। Unlimited credit।
Euler:c₂=βR c₁; c₁=W/(1+β); s=y₁−c₁।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: FOCs:1/c₁=βR/c₂ ⇒ c₂=(9/10)(11/10)c₁=(99/100)c₁।
- Step 2: PV budget c₁+c₂/R=200 में substitute:c₁+βc₁=(19/10)c₁=200।
- Step 3: c₁=2000/19≈105.2632; c₂=(99/100)(2000/19)=1980/19≈104.2105।
- Step 4: Saving 100−2000/19=−100/19≈−5.2632 ⇒ borrow 5.2632 today।
- Step 5: Repayment R×100/19=110/19; c₂=110−110/19=1980/19 verified।
उत्तर (Final Answer): c₁=2000/19,c₂=1980/19; borrowing 100/19 today।
Numerical 27: No borrowing: Euler equality
प्रश्न (Question): U=ln c₁+ln c₂,y₁=50,y₂=165,r10% और borrowing prohibited है। Unconstrained तथा constrained optima compare करें।
दिया गया (Given): β=1,R=1.1,W=50+165/1.1=200; borrowing constraint c₁≤50।
Unrestricted: c₁=W/2,c₂=R c₁; binding no-borrowing constraint:u′(c₁)≥βR u′(c₂)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Unrestricted optimum c₁=100,c₂=110।
- Step 2: Feasible boundary c₁=50,c₂=165,save 0।
- Step 3: Along budget dU/d c₁=1/c₁−1.1/c₂।
- Step 5: Euler inequality:1/50=0.02 >1.1/165≈0.006667। Equality नहीं।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Constrained c₁=50,c₂=165; unrestricted 100,110 infeasible।
Numerical 28: CRRA model: EIS और consumption growth
प्रश्न (Question): U=u(c₁)+u(c₂),u(c)=−1/c अर्थातσ2; incomes 100,121 और real interest 21% है। Optimal consumption path,EIS और saving निकालिए।
दिया गया (Given): β=1,R=121/100; W=100+121/(121/100)=200; positive consumption।
c₂/c₁=(βR)^(1/σ)=g; EIS=1/σ; c₁=W/(1+g/R)।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: u′(c)=1/c²। Euler 1/c₁²=R/c₂² ⇒ g=√1.21=1.1=11/10।
- Step 2: g/R=(11/10)/(121/100)=10/11। Budget c₁(1+10/11)=200।
- Step 3: c₁=200×11/21=2200/21≈104.7619; c₂=(11/10)c₁=2420/21≈115.2381।
- Step 4: Saving 100−2200/21=−100/21≈−4.7619; future loan repayment(121/100)(100/21)=121/21।
- Step 5: c₂=121−121/21=2420/21 verified; EIS=½।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Consumption growth 10%,c₁=2200/21,c₂=2420/21,EIS=½; borrow 100/21।
(Given): β=1; real endowments fixed; unlimited borrowing/lending at same rate।
W=y₁+y₂/R; c₁=W/2; c₂=R c₁; s=y₁−c₁।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Old R=1 ⇒ W=200,c₁=100,c₂=100,s=0।
- Step 2: New R=1.25 ⇒ future income PV 100/1.25=80; W=180।
- Step 3: New c₁=180/2=90; c₂=1.25×90=112.5。
- Step 4: New saving 100−90=10। Future check 100+1.25×10=112.5।
- Step 5: Changes: Δc₁=−10,Δc₂=+12.5,Δs=+10। Endowment(100,100) remains on both budget lines।
Numerical 30: Different borrowing/lending rates: kink optimum
प्रश्न (Question): U=ln c₁+0.95ln c₂,y₁=100,y₂=110।
दिया गया (Given): β=19/20; R_l=11/10; R_b=6/5। Saving branch c₁≤100; borrowing branch c₁≥100।
Branch candidate c₁=[y₁+y₂/R]/(1+β); at kink R_l≤MRS≤R_b।
हल (Solution):
- Step 1: Saving branch W_l=100+110/1.1=200 ⇒ candidate c₁=200/(39/20)=4000/39≈102.5641।
- Step 2: Borrowing branch W_b=100+110/1.2=100+275/3=575/3। Candidate c₁=(575/3)/(39/20)=11500/117≈98.2906।
उत्तर (Final Answer): Optimum c₁=100,c₂=110; neither borrowing nor saving।
