Syllabus
Uploaded UGC NET syllabus, Unit 1 में Theory of Production and Costs है। Uploaded UP PGT syllabus में Cost and Revenue curves स्पष्ट हैं। ⭐ दोनों exams: cost concepts, short-run और long-run curves, MC–AC relationships। ⭐ NET depth: cost minimisation, duality, cost-function properties और Shephard’s Lemma।
| Concept | Easy meaning / example | MCQ point |
|---|---|---|
| Implicit Cost (अंतर्निहित लागत) | अपने resources का opportunity cost: own shop का forgone rent, own capital का forgone return, owner की forgone salary।
| Accounting / Economic Cost | Standard exam convention: accounting cost में recorded explicit costs; economic cost में relevant explicit + implicit costs।
| Comparable units और perspective में: social marginal cost = private marginal cost + marginal external cost। |
Average Fixed Cost: AFC = TFC/Q
Average Variable Cost: AVC = TVC/Q
Average Total Cost: ATC = AC = TC/Q = AFC + AVC
Discrete MC: ΔTC/ΔQ = ΔTVC/ΔQ, जब TFC constant है।
Continuous MC: dTC/dQ = dTVC/dQ
| MC > AC | AC rising | Average की direction MC से relative position तय करती है। |
| MC = AC | AC stationary | Usual U-shaped case में नीचे से crossing → AC minimum। |
| MC < AVC / MC > AVC | AVC falling / rising | Same rule variable average |
dAVC/dQ = (MC − AVC)/Q
Usual smooth U-shaped curves और positive fixed cost में sequence: MC minimum → AVC minimum → AC minimum।
एक variable input L, fixed capital और constant wage w हो; Q=f(L), MPL>0, TVC=wL। तब:
MP maximum → MC minimum; AP maximum → AVC minimum।
Assumptions — U shape
- Given technology, input quality और relevant period; short run में fixed input और एक variable input।
- Input price constant, inputs efficiently used और increasing-then-diminishing marginal productivity वाला conventional pattern।
4. Long-run Cost Theory और Envelope Curve ⭐
Long run में firm plant size/input mix चुन सकती है।
इसलिए same technology, prices और output पर LTC ≤ STC तथा LAC ≤ SAC।
5. Traditional बनाम Modern Cost Theory
| Point | Traditional textbook model | Modern / empirical approach |
|---|---|---|
| SR average variable cost | Usually U-shaped | काफी operating range में near-constant / saucer-shaped हो सकती है। |
| Long-run average cost | Often U-shaped: economies के बाद diseconomies | L-shaped / falling then nearly flat pattern संभव। |
| Meaning | Useful analytical benchmark | Actual technology, organisation और data पर dependence। |
P. W. S. Andrews का Manufacturing Business (1949) manufacturing firms के cost/pricing analysis से जुड़ा important work है।
Economies of scale में given technology/experience पर current output rate/plant scale बदलती है।
6. Economies of Scale, Scope और Cost Elasticity
- Returns to Scale (RTS): Economies of Scale: output बढ़ने पर minimum long-run average cost की response।
Scale-economy index, इस convention में: S = AC/MC = 1/EC
EC<1 → LAC falling; EC=1 → LAC locally stationary; EC>1 → LAC rising।
Homogeneous production degree h>0, fixed positive input prices और efficient cost minimisation में C(Q)=Q1/hC(1), इसलिए EC=1/h: IRS → economies; CRS → constant LAC; DRS → diseconomies।
Economies of Scope (विविध उत्पाद साथ बनाने की बचत)
Degree of scope, इस definition में: [C(Q1,0)+C(0,Q2)−C(Q1,Q2)] / C(Q1,Q2)
7. NET Advanced: Cost Minimisation, Duality और Shephard’s Lemma ⭐
Primal approach: production function से least-cost input bundle निकालना। Dual approach: minimum cost function से conditional factor demands और technology-related information निकालना।
Regular interior solution: MPL/MPK = w/r
Equivalent: MPL/w = MPK/r
Isocost: K=C/r−(w/r)L; slope = −w/r
| Property | Condition / interpretation |
|---|---|
| Nondecreasing in input prices | किसी price बढ़ने पर given Q का minimum cost घट नहीं सकता। |
| Degree-one homogeneous in prices | C(Q,tw,tr)=tC(Q,w,r), t>0। |
| Concave in input prices | Feasible bundles |
| Nondecreasing in Q | Standard output requirement/free-disposal framework
Envelope: ∂C/∂Q=MC=λ, regular binding-output solution में।
Euler in prices: w(∂C/∂w)+r(∂C/∂r)=C
Superscript c = conditional: target output fixed है।
Cobb–Douglas से general cost formula
C = h(Q/A)1/h(w/α)α/h(r/β)β/h
Lc=(α/h)C/w; Kc=(β/h)C/r
Special case Q=√(LK): C=2Q√(wr), Lc=Q√(r/w), Kc=Q√(w/r)
| Economist | Year / publication | Exam association |
|---|---|---|
| Friedrich von Wieser | Der natürliche Werth, 1889; English Natural Value, 1893 | Austrian alternative-use/opportunity-cost reasoning और imputation। |
| Alfred Marshall | Principles of Economics, first edition 1890 | Real costs, expenses of production, short/long periods, internal/external economies। |
| Jacob Viner | “Cost Curves and Supply Curves,” Zeitschrift für Nationalökonomie, vol.3, 1931, pp.23–46 | Classic cost/supply-curve analysis। |
| P. W. S. Andrews | Manufacturing Business, 1949 | Manufacturing firms का cost/pricing analysis; modern cost-theory discussion में important association। |
| Ronald W. Shephard | Cost and Production Functions, 1953, Princeton University Press | Cost–production duality और Shephard’s Lemma। Shephard spelling याद रखें। |
Memory ladder: Wieser 1889/1893 → Marshall 1890 → Viner 1931 → Andrews 1949 → Shephard 1953। नाम से अलग keyword जोड़ें: Wieser–Alternative, Marshall–Periods, Viner–Curves, Andrews–Manufacturing, Shephard–Derivative। Publication का year किसी पूरे multi-author field का single “invention year” नहीं होता।
9. Step-by-Step Solved Numericals — Easy → NET Advanced
Example 1: Explicit + Implicit = Economic Cost
Question: Sales ₹1,00,000; recorded business expenses ₹50,000। Owner की forgone salary ₹12,000 और own shop का forgone rent ₹8,000। Costs और profits निकालें।
- Step 1: Explicit/recorded cost = ₹50,000। Implicit cost = 12,000+8,000 = ₹20,000।
- Step 2: Economic cost = 50,000+20,000 = ₹70,000।
- Step 3: Accounting profit = 1,00,000−50,000 = ₹50,000। Economic profit = 1,00,000−70,000 = ₹30,000।
Final answer: Economic cost ₹70,000; economic profit ₹30,000।
Example 2: Opportunity Cost: best alternative
- Step 1: Available alternatives mutually exclusive
- Step 2: C चुनने पर छोड़े गए A और B में best feasible alternative A है।
- Step 3: Opportunity cost = ₹30,000; यह 30,000+25,000 नहीं। C का net advantage relative to A = 20,000−30,000 = −₹10,000।
Final answer: Opportunity cost ₹30,000; C की relative disadvantage ₹10,000।
- Step 2: Incremental gain = additional revenue−additional relevant cost = 30,000−25,000।
Final answer: Accept; incremental contribution ₹5,000।
Question: TC=100+20Q+Q²। Q=10 पर TFC, TVC, AFC, AVC, AC और continuous MC निकालें।
- Step 1: TFC=100; TVC=20Q+Q²। Q10 पर TVC=200+100=300; TC=400।
- Step 2: AFC=100/10=10; AVC=300/10=30; AC=400/10=40।
- Step 3: MC=dTC/dQ=20+2Q। Q10 पर MC=40; यहाँ MC=AC।
Final answer: TFC100; TVC300; TC400; AFC10; AVC30; AC40; MC40।
Example 5: Discrete MC और derivative अलग
Question: Same TC=100+20Q+Q² में 10th unit का incremental cost और Q10 पर derivative MC निकालें।
- Step 1: 10th unit का cost = TC(10)−TC(9)। TC(10)=400; TC(9)=100+180+81=361।
- Step 2: Discrete MC for 9→10 = 400−361 = 39; ΔQ=1 है।
- Step 3: Derivative MC at Q10 = 20+2(10)=40। Difference interval का exact change है; derivative point slope है।
Final answer: Discrete 10th-unit MC ₹39; continuous MC at Q10 ₹40।
Example 6: MC minimum बनाम AVC minimum
Question: TC=32+18Q−6Q²+Q³।
- Step 1: TVC=18Q−6Q²+Q³; AVC=18−6Q+Q²; MC=18−12Q+3Q²।
- Step 2: dMC/dQ=−12+6Q=0 → Q2। Second derivative6>0; MC(2)=6।
- Step 3: dAVC/dQ=−6+2Q=0 → Q3। Second derivative2>0; AVC(3)=9।
Final answer: MC minimum: Q2, value₹6; AVC minimum: Q3, value₹9।
Example 7: AC minimum: equality plus test
Question: Same TC=32+18Q−6Q²+Q³ में minimum AC निकालें।
- Step 1: AC=32/Q+18−6Q+Q²; dAC/dQ=−32/Q²−6+2Q।
- Step 2: Q4 पर derivative = −2−6+8=0। Second derivative=64/Q³+2>0 for Q>0: AC strictly convex, minimum unique।
- Step 3: AC(4)=8+18−24+16=18। MC(4)=18−48+48=18।
- Step 4: Output sequence इस function में MC min2 → AVC min3 → AC min4 है।
Final answer: Minimum AC ₹18 at Q4; MC=AC=18।
- Step 1: Variable part unchanged। New AC=64/Q+18−6Q+Q²।
- Step 2: Q4 पर new AC=16+18−24+16=26; old AC18 था। Increase=32/4=8।
- Step 3: AVC at Q4=10 और MC at Q4=18 unchanged। Old Q4 अब new AC का minimum होना जरूरी नहीं।
Final answer: New AC₹26; AVC₹10; MC₹18।
Example 9: Production–Cost bridge
Question: केवल labour variable है; wage w=₹120, MP_L=6 units और AP_L=4 units। MC और AVC?
- Step 1: Conditions check: one variable input, fixed capital, constant wage और positive MP।
- Step 2: MC=w/MP_L=120/6=20।
- Step 3: AVC=w/AP_L=120/4=30।
Final answer: MC₹20; AVC₹30; AVC falling।
Example 10: Cobb–Douglas: least-cost bundle
Question: Q=√(LK), target Q12, w4 और r9। Optimal L,K और minimum cost निकालें।
- Step 1: MP_L/MP_K=K/L। Interior condition K/L=w/r=4/9 → K=(4/9)L।
- Step 2: Target LK=144। Substitute: (4/9)L²=144 → L²=324 → L18; K8।
- Step 3: Cost=4(18)+9(8)=72+72=144। Check: √(18×8)=12।
Final answer: L18, K8; minimum cost₹144।
Example 11: SR cost बनाम LR cost
Question: Same Q=√(LK), w4,r9,target Q12। Short run में K=4 fixed है। SR और LR cost compare करें।
- Step 1: Fixed K4: Q=2√L → L=Q²/4। Q12 पर L=144/4=36।
- Step 2: SR total cost = wL+rK = 4(36)+9(4)=180; SAC=180/12=15।
- Step 3: LR optimum previous result L18,K8: LTC144; LAC12।
Final answer: STC₹180 ≥ LTC₹144; SAC₹15 ≥ LAC₹12।
Example 12: Shephard’s Lemma से factor demands
Question: C(Q,w,r)=2Q√(wr)।
- Step 1: Labour demand = ∂C/∂w = Q√(r/w)। Value=10√(9/4)=15।
- Step 2: Capital demand = ∂C/∂r = Q√(w/r)। Value=10√(4/9)=20/3।
- Step 3: C=2×10×6=120। Euler check: wL+rK=4(15)+9(20/3)=60+60=120।
Final answer: L^c15; K^c20/3≈6.667; C₹120।
Example 13: Cost elasticity से economies पहचानें
Question: Long-run minimum cost C₹100, Q10 और MC₹8 है। E_C और scale index? Homogeneous production degree h=1.2 हो तो theoretical E_C?
- Step 1: AC=C/Q=100/10=10। E_C=MC/AC=8/10=0.8<1 → LAC locally falling।
Final answer: Observed E_C0.8, S1.25: economies; h1.2 case में E_C5/6।
Example 14: Economies of Scope numerical
- Step 1: Separate total cost = 50+80=130।
- Step 2: Absolute saving = 130−110=20।
- Step 3: Defined scope degree = (130−110)/110=2/11≈0.1818=18.18%।
- Step 4: अगर question saving as percentage of separate cost पूछे, denominator130 होगा: 20/130≈15.38%; question का denominator पढ़ें।
Final answer: Economies of scope मौजूद; absolute saving20; defined degree18.18%।
Example 15: Shutdown और break-even prices
Question: Price-taking firm: TC=32+18Q−6Q²+Q³; fixed cost unavoidable।
- Step 1: Earlier results: min AVC9 at Q3; min ATC18 at Q4। Shutdown threshold9; break-even18।
- Step 2: P8<min AVC9: shut down, Q0; unavoidable fixed-cost loss₹32।
- Step 3: P9: Q3 पर TR27; TVC27; TC59। Profit−32; shutdown में भी−32: indifferent।
- Step 4: P18: rising MC branch पर Q4। TR72; TC32+72−96+64=72; economic profit0।
Final answer: P8 shutdown; P9 indifferent at Q3; P18 break-even at Q4।
Example 16: Prices double: cost homogeneity
Question: Q=√(LK), Q12।
- Step 1: All factor prices
- Step 2: Degree-one homogeneity in prices: new minimum cost = 2×144=288।
- Step 3: L^c=12√(18/8)=18 और K^c=12√(8/18)=8: same physical bundle।
- Step 4: Euler check: 8(18)+18(8)=288। Technology/output target unchanged हैं।
Final answer: New cost₹288; L18,K8 unchanged।
10. Cost से firm decisions — Shutdown और Break-even ⭐
Standard price-taking short-run firm, unavoidable fixed cost और कोई additional avoidable fixed/start-up cost नहीं हो: Shutdown price=min AVC; Break-even price=min ATC।
- P=min AVC: operating और shutting down के बीच indifferent, usual conditions में।
- P=min ATC: zero economic profit; normal return cost में covered है। Positive-profit range में P>relevant ATC।
11. ⚠️ Exam Traps और memory tricks
- Fixed cost बढ़ी: TC/AC/AFC ऊपर; given technology में TVC/AVC/MC unchanged।
- MC=AC: stationary average; usual upward crossing में minimum। Flat/irregular curves में equality alone enough नहीं।
- AC minimum ≠ profit maximum: profit output demand/revenue और cost दोनों पर depends करता है।
- Discrete MC ≠ derivative MC: ΔQ=1 के difference और dTC/dQ को बिना instruction interchangeable न रखें।
- Cost concave किसमें? Input prices में; output में always concave/convex नहीं।
- Price homogeneity ≠ production CRS: C में all input prices की degree 1 हर regular technology में; output degree technology पर depend करती है।
- LAC envelope: every SAC minimum
- Returns vs Scale: “one input varies” = returns to variable factor; “all inputs scale” = RTS।
- Scope vs Scale: products साथ बनाना = Scope; same product का scale बढ़ाना = Scale।
“Price derivative → Input; Output derivative → MC।”
12. Final Revision Table —

| Shutdown / Break-even | min AVC / min ATC, standard competitive model। |
| Sunk cost | Future incremental choice में irrelevant; current opportunity cost still relevant। |
