लाभ का सिद्धांत (Theory of Profit) को आसान सवाल से शुरू करें: business की बिक्री से सभी relevant costs निकालने के बाद क्या बचा, और यह surplus किस कारण पैदा हुआ?
Hindi–Hinglish–English mix में 5 प्रमुख theories, economist–year–publication facts, 5 labelled graphs और 15 step-by-step solved examples। कठिन terms के साथ English दिया गया है।
Syllabus connection: Uploaded UP PGT syllabus में Knight की Profit Theory explicitly दी गई है। UGC NET के Factor Pricing, Theory of Firm और Market Structure के लिए profit concepts व optimisation relevant हैं। Historical comparison supporting preparation है; हर listed theory को syllabus की अलग official heading न समझें। Examples original practice हैं, official PYQs नहीं।
1. Profit की basic definitions — revenue और profit अलग हैं
Total Revenue (TR) = sales receipts; single-price output model में TR = P×Q। Profit (π) = revenue minus relevant cost। π यहाँ profit का symbol है, inflation rate नहीं। Cost की definition बदलेगी तो profit की definition भी बदलेगी।
Economic profit: πE = TR − Explicit costs − Implicit costs
Therefore: πE = πA − Implicit costs
Explicit costs (प्रत्यक्ष costs) में hired labour wages, purchased material, rented shop payment आदि आते हैं। Implicit costs (निहित / opportunity costs) में own shop का foregone rent, own funds का alternative return और owner के time की next-best earning शामिल हो सकती है। यह introductory economics का exam calculation है; question में depreciation जैसे cost items दिए हों तो उन्हें भी उचित cost में शामिल करें।
Example: Sales ₹1 लाख, explicit cost ₹70,000, own resources की opportunity cost ₹20,000 → accounting profit ₹30,000; economic profit ₹10,000। Own shop का cash rent न देना उसकी opportunity cost को zero नहीं बनाता।
2. Normal, supernormal और negative economic profit
Normal profit (सामान्य / minimum required entrepreneurial return) entrepreneur को इस activity में बनाए रखने वाला required return है। Economic-cost framework में इसे relevant opportunity costs के हिस्से के रूप में cost में include करते हैं। यह सभी implicit costs का synonym नहीं: own land और capital की opportunity costs भी अलग हो सकती हैं।
| Outcome | Meaning | MCQ implication |
|---|---|---|
| πE > 0 | Supernormal / abnormal profit | All economic costs के ऊपर surplus |
| πE = 0 | Normal-profit position | Relevant opportunity costs covered; entrepreneur का required return absent नहीं |
| Economist / Verified year | Publication | Exam association |
|---|---|---|
| Francis A. Walker — 1887 article | “The Source of Business Profits”, Quarterly Journal of Economics, 1(3), April, pp. 265–288 | Rent-like differential return to superior business ability |
| F. B. Hawley — 1893 article | “The Risk Theory of Profit”, QJE, 7(4), July, pp. 459–479 | Risk-bearing theory |
| J. B. Clark — 1899 book | The Distribution of Wealth: A Theory of Wages, Interest and Profits | Dynamic changes और temporary pure profit |
| Joseph A. Schumpeter — German publication 1911; English edition 1934 | Theorie der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung; English: The Theory of Economic Development, translated by Redvers Opie | Innovation / carrying out new combinations |
| Frank H. Knight — 1921 book | Risk, Uncertainty and Profit | Non-measurable uncertainty और entrepreneurial residual |
Memory: Walker–Ability; Hawley–Risk; Clark–Change; Schumpeter–Innovation; Knight–Uncertainty. Years का sequence: 1887 → 1893 → 1899 → 1911/1934 → 1921। Schumpeter का German और English year एक साथ अलग याद करें।
4. Walker: Profit as rent of superior business ability
Core idea: Entrepreneurs की efficiency समान नहीं होती। समान resources को बेहतर organise करने वाला entrepreneur marginal / lowest-grade entrepreneur से ज्यादा output या कम cost achieve कर सकता है। उस relative advantage का surplus rent जैसा है।
Easy example: Same revenue ₹1 लाख पर marginal producer की all-relevant cost ₹1 लाख है। Better organiser की cost ₹90,000 → surplus ₹10,000। No-profit producer benchmark है; उसका normal remuneration cost में पहले शामिल है।
Assumptions / limits: Competitive comparison, comparable resources/products और business ability differences relevant हैं। All profits को ability alone नहीं समझा सकती; demand surprises, innovations तथा market power भी matter करते हैं। Walker का “no profits” pure surplus के बारे में है, entrepreneur के सारे receipts zero होने के बारे में नहीं।
5. Hawley: Risk-bearing Theory
6. Clark: Dynamic Theory — change + adjustment
Static state (स्थिर benchmark): Economy में production/consumption चलते हैं, लेकिन basic methods, resources और wants में relevant changes नहीं हैं; competitive adjustment complete है। ऐसे benchmark में pure entrepreneurial profit vanish करता है; labour और capital की incomes remain करती हैं। Static का अर्थ “किसी ने कोई production नहीं किया” नहीं है।
Dynamic profit: Changes नया opportunity / gap बनाते हैं और adjustment में समय लगता है। इस interval में temporary profit मिल सकता है; competition तथा factor-payment adjustment उसे erode कर सकते हैं।
| Clark के 5 dynamic changes | Easy clue |
|---|---|
| Population | Workers / consumers की संख्या बदलना |
| Capital | Productive capital की मात्रा बढ़ना |
| Production methods | Technology / process improvement |
| Industrial organisation | Business establishment forms / efficiency बदलना |
| Consumer wants | Needs / product preferences का विस्तार |
Memory: P–C–M–O–W = Population, Capital, Methods, Organisation, Wants। Dynamic change से loss भी संभव है। Knight की criticism याद रखें: change यदि perfectly foreseen और fully adjusted हो तो change alone से unexplained pure profit नहीं निकलता; uncertainty महत्वपूर्ण है।
7. Schumpeter: Innovation Theory को “new combinations” से समझें
Innovation (नवप्रवर्तन) productive resources को commercially नए ढंग से combine / implement करना है। Entrepreneur यह function performs करता है; उसे हर case में inventor या capital owner होना जरूरी नहीं। New combination सफल हो तो cost advantage, new demand या organisational advantage से entrepreneurial surplus मिल सकता है।
| 5 forms of innovation | Example |
|---|---|
| New good / new quality | Consumers के लिए नया product या quality |
| New method of production | इस industry में नया process; जरूरी नहीं कि नया scientific discovery हो |
| New market | इस industry का previously unentered market में प्रवेश; market पहले से exist कर सकता है |
| New source of supply | Raw material / intermediate inputs का नया accessible source; उसे invent करना जरूरी नहीं |
| New industrial organisation | नई organisation, monopoly position बनना या उसका टूटना |
Process: New combination → commercial advantage → surplus → imitation / competition / adjustment → उसी innovation का surplus erode हो सकता है।
| Point | Measurable risk | Knightian uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Probability | Known / statistically measurable | Reliable objective probabilities unavailable |
| Example | Many comparable cases में measured damage frequency | Unprecedented product का market acceptance |
| Theory | Central explanation | Key limitation / trap |
|---|---|---|
| Walker | Superior business ability का differential surplus | All profit को ability alone से explain नहीं |
| Hawley | Risk-bearing का inducement | Risk लेना actual success की guarantee नहीं |
| Clark | Dynamic changes और incomplete adjustment | Fully anticipated changes / uncertainty का प्रश्न |
| Schumpeter | Successfully implemented new combinations | Inventor, manager, financier, innovator अलग functions हो सकते हैं |
| Knight | Non-measurable uncertainty; judgement-based residual | Reward fixed नहीं; losses possible |
Modern synthesis: Actual business surplus में innovation, market power / entry barriers, temporary adjustment, luck / unexpected changes और superior organisation के effects साथ हो सकते हैं। Monopoly एक possible source है; हर profit monopoly profit नहीं। Monopoly power होने से positive economic profit automatic नहीं—cost बहुत अधिक हो सकती है।
10. Profit maximisation: conditions, formulas और graphs
Interior differentiable optimum: dπ/dQ = MR − MC = 0 ⇒ MR = MC
Strict local maximum condition: d²π/dQ² = dMR/dQ − dMC/dQ < 0
Profit amount: π = (P − ATC)Q, Q > 0
Conditions: Feasible output range, boundaries तथा operating/shutdown choice भी compare करें। MR=MC अकेले maximum की guarantee नहीं; यह minimum / non-maximising stationary point भी हो सकता है। Strict second-order condition local maximum देती है; global maximum के लिए feasible alternatives देखें।
A. TR–TC approach: सबसे बड़ा vertical gap
Profit maximum वहाँ जहाँ TR−TC maximum हो। TR का अपने-आप maximum होना sufficient नहीं। Below graph में TR=100Q−Q², TC=400+20Q: TR maximum Q50 पर, लेकिन profit maximum Q40 पर है।
B. Monopoly: पहले output, फिर demand से price
Demand P=a−bQ हो तो TR=aQ−bQ² और MR=a−2bQ। MR=MC से Q चुनें; फिर P demand / AR curve से निकालें। MR की value को price न मानें। Profit rectangle की height P−ATC है, P−MC नहीं।
C. Competitive firm: P=AR=MR; supernormal profit
Price-taking firm given P पर relevant rising-MC branch में P=MC से operating output चुनती है। P>ATC हो तो positive economic profit; firm-level horizontal price line downward-sloping industry demand नहीं है।
D. Zero economic profit: normal return already included
Identical firms, free entry/exit, no persistent advantage और standard long-run competitive assumptions में P=min LRAC और economic profit zero होता है। नीचे एक simple quadratic cost example में ATC minimum पर P=MC=ATC है। यह numerical cost-curve illustration है, full industry entry process का graph नहीं।
E. Loss minimisation: loss हो फिर भी short run में production क्यों?
P > ATC ⇒ profit
P = ATC ⇒ zero economic profit
AVC < P < ATC ⇒ loss, लेकिन operate करना shutdown से बेहतर हो सकता है
P < min AVC ⇒ shut down
P = min AVC ⇒ operating और shutdown में textbook indifference
Fixed cost trap: Unavoidable fixed cost changing alone से MR और MC नहीं बदलते; interior operating optimum वही रह सकता है। Profit level बदलता है। Long-run participation या avoidable-cost case में अलग decision हो सकता है।
Profit vs quasi-rent: Gross quasi-rent = TR−TVC; economic profit = TR−TVC−TFC। इसलिए quasi-rent positive होने पर भी profit zero / negative हो सकता है। Fixed costs को छोड़कर “profit” निकालना गलत है।
11. 15 original examples — step-by-step solutions
सभी costs / revenues same period के हैं। Economic-profit calculations में TC all relevant economic costs को represent करती है, जब तक question अलग definition न दे। Probability exercises known-probability practice हैं। Graphs और calculations illustrative teaching models हैं।
Example 1: Accounting vs economic profit
Question: Annual TR ₹5,00,000, explicit costs ₹3,50,000। Owner की foregone salary ₹70,000, own shop rent ₹20,000 और own funds का alternative return ₹20,000 है।
- Step 1: Implicit costs = 70,000 + 20,000 + 20,000 = ₹1,10,000। ये तीन अलग resources की costs हैं।
- Step 2: Accounting profit = 5,00,000 − 3,50,000 = ₹1,50,000।
- Step 3: Economic profit = 1,50,000 − 1,10,000 = ₹40,000।
- Step 4: Owner के time के लिए foregone salary शामिल है; उसी service का normal remuneration अलग से दोबारा न जोड़ें।
Final answer: Accounting profit ₹1,50,000; economic profit ₹40,000। Implicit costs का पूरा total “normal entrepreneurial profit” का synonym नहीं।
Example 2: Zero economic profit में entrepreneur क्या पाता है?
Question: TR ₹1,00,000; explicit costs ₹80,000; इस example में sole implicit cost entrepreneur का required normal return ₹20,000 है।
- Step 1: Accounting profit = 1,00,000 − 80,000 = ₹20,000।
- Step 2: Economic cost = 80,000 + 20,000 = ₹1,00,000।
- Step 3: Economic profit = TR − economic cost = 0।
- Step 4: ₹20,000 normal return covered है; इसे profit के ऊपर फिर add करने की जरूरत नहीं।
Final answer: Economic profit zero; entrepreneur का normal return ₹20,000 covered। “Zero economic profit = कोई income नहीं” गलत है।
Example 3: Positive accounting profit, economic loss
Question: TR ₹4,00,000, explicit costs ₹3,00,000, implicit costs ₹1,50,000।
- Step 1: Accounting profit = 4,00,000 − 3,00,000 = ₹1,00,000।
- Step 2: Economic profit = 1,00,000 − 1,50,000 = −₹50,000।
- Step 3: Business next-best alternative से ₹50,000 कम return दे रहा है, despite positive accounting profit।
Final answer: Accounting gain ₹1,00,000; economic loss ₹50,000। Opportunity-cost definition answer बदलती है।
Example 4: Monopoly profit maximisation
Question: P = 100 − Q; TC = 400 + 20Q; feasible Q 0 से 100। Price और costs रुपये में हैं।
- Step 1: TR = (100−Q)Q = 100Q − Q²; MR = 100 − 2Q; MC = 20।
- Step 2: MR = MC: 100 − 2Q = 20 ⇒ Q* = 40।
- Step 3: d²π/dQ² = −2 < 0; π concave है, so this feasible point maximises operating profit।
- Step 4: Price demand से: P* = 100 − 40 = ₹60, MR ₹20 को price न लिखें।
- Step 5: TR = 60×40 = ₹2,400; TC = 400 + 800 = ₹1,200; π = ₹1,200। Shutdown profit = −₹400।
Final answer: Q*=40, P*=₹60, economic profit ₹1,200। ATC=1,200/40=₹30; rectangle (60−30)×40=₹1,200।
Example 5: Revenue maximum और profit maximum अलग
Question: Example 4 की demand/cost use करें। TR maximum output को profit maximum से compare करें।
- Step 1: TR maximum: MR=0 ⇒ 100−2Q=0 ⇒ Q=50; P=₹50।
- Step 2: At Q50: TR=₹2,500, TC=₹1,400, profit=₹1,100।
- Step 3: At profit-maximising Q40: TR=₹2,400, TC=₹1,200, profit=₹1,200।
- Step 4: Q50 पर ₹100 extra revenue के साथ ₹200 extra cost आती है; profit ₹100 कम है।
Final answer: TR max at Q50; profit max at Q40। Sales maximum को profit maximum न मानें।
Example 6: Only fixed cost बढ़े तो optimum?
Question: P=100−Q, old TC=400+20Q; new TC=800+20Q। Fixed costs unavoidable हैं।
- Step 1: New MC=20 ही है; MR=100−2Q unchanged है।
- Step 2: MR=MC से Q*=40 और P*=₹60 remain।
- Step 3: New TC=800+20(40)=₹1,600; TR=₹2,400; profit=₹800।
- Step 4: Old profit₹1,200 → new₹800, fall₹400। Shutdown profit −₹800 है, so operating still better।
Final answer: Same operating Q40; lower profit₹800। Fixed-cost change अकेले MC नहीं बदलती।
Example 7: Competitive firm: supernormal profit
Question: Market P=₹80; TC=400+20Q+Q²। Firm price taker है; fixed cost unavoidable।
- Step 1: MR=P=80; MC=20+2Q। 80=20+2Q ⇒ Q*=30।
- Step 2: π″=−2<0; this is a maximum। TR=80×30=₹2,400।
- Step 3: TVC=20(30)+30²=₹1,500; TC=₹1,900; ATC=1,900/30≈₹63.33।
- Step 4: Profit=2,400−1,900=₹500; same as (80−63⅓)×30।
Final answer: Q30; positive economic profit₹500। P>ATC, not merely P>MC, establishes positive profit।
Example 8: Break-even / normal-profit price
Question: Same TC=400+20Q+Q², लेकिन market P=₹60।
- Step 1: MR=MC: 60=20+2Q ⇒ Q*=20।
- Step 2: TR=60×20=₹1,200; TVC=400+400=₹800; TC=₹1,200।
- Step 3: ATC=400/Q+20+Q; at Q20 it is ₹60। Minimum: dATC/dQ=−400/Q²+1=0 ⇒ Q20।
- Step 4: Profit=0; gross quasi-rent=TR−TVC=₹400, exactly covers fixed cost₹400।
Final answer: P=MR=MC=ATC=₹60 at Q20; economic profit0। Positive quasi-rent does not imply positive profit।
Example 9: Loss होने पर भी operate
Question: TC=400+20Q+Q²; market P=₹40; fixed cost₹400 unavoidable।
- Step 1: P=MC: 40=20+2Q ⇒ Q*=10।
- Step 2: TR=₹400; TVC=20(10)+10²=₹300; TC=₹700।
- Step 3: AVC=₹30; ATC=₹70। AVC<P<ATC, so price covers variable cost and ₹100 toward fixed cost।
- Step 4: Operating profit=400−700=−₹300। Shutdown profit=−₹400। −300 is better than −400।
Final answer: Operate at Q10 in the short run; minimum loss₹300। Quasi-rent₹100 is positive while economic profit is negative।
Example 10: Shutdown condition और boundary choice
Question: Same cost function TC=400+20Q+Q², लेकिन P=₹15। Fixed cost unavoidable है।
- Step 1: For every positive Q, AVC=20+Q>20>15। No positive output covers its variable cost।
- Step 2: Variable surplus TR−TVC=15Q−20Q−Q²=−5Q−Q²<0 for Q>0।
- Step 3: Formal P=MC gives Q=−2.5, which is infeasible। Negative quantity accept न करें।
- Step 4: Choose boundary Q=0; avoid all variable cost; incur fixed cost₹400।
Final answer: Shutdown: Q0, profit−₹400। MR=MC की infeasible root को output नहीं लिखते।
Example 11: Innovation gain: setup cost मत भूलें
Question: Given output100 और price₹60। Old total economic cost₹6,000। New method की recurring economic cost₹4,500 और same period की extra setup cost₹800 है।
- Step 1: TR=60×100=₹6,000; old profit=6,000−6,000=0।
- Step 2: New total cost=4,500+800=₹5,300।
- Step 3: New profit=6,000−5,300=₹700; gain over old method=₹700।
- Step 4: Recurring cost saving₹1,500 है, लेकिन setup cost निकालने के बाद net gain₹700। Price/output fixed हैं; यह global output optimisation नहीं।
Final answer: Innovation से given case में net gain₹700। Gross saving₹1,500 को final profit न लिखें।
Example 12: Walker-style differential surplus
Question: Same revenue₹1,00,000; all-relevant costs marginal entrepreneur₹1,00,000, A₹90,000, B₹85,000। Normal remuneration already costs में है।
- Step 1: Marginal entrepreneur profit=1,00,000−1,00,000=0।
- Step 2: A profit=1,00,000−90,000=₹10,000।
- Step 3: B profit=1,00,000−85,000=₹15,000। B का A से extra differential₹5,000।
- Step 4: Comparable conditions में organisational cost advantage को rent-like differential के रूप में illustrate किया गया है।
Final answer: Profits: marginal0, A₹10,000, B₹15,000। Marginal entrepreneur का normal return zero नहीं; cost में included है।
Example 13: Measurable risk और insurance cost
Question: Annual damage probability0.02, damage₹50,000। Insurer का administration loading₹200। Policy fully covers only this specified loss; TR₹1,00,000, other economic costs₹97,000।
- Step 1: Expected damage=0.02×50,000=₹1,000।
- Step 2: Illustrative premium=expected damage1,000+loading200=₹1,200।
- Step 3: Fully insured specified loss के बाद profit=1,00,000−97,000−1,200=₹1,800।
- Step 4: Premium और covered expected damage दोनों को अलग से subtract करने पर loss double-count होगा। Other business uncertainties इस policy से automatically covered नहीं।
Final answer: Expected damage₹1,000; premium₹1,200; insured-case profit₹1,800। Insurable risk cost और Knightian pure profit का distinction याद रखें।
Example 14: Expected profit positive, loss फिर भी possible
Question: Profit outcomes: +₹40,000 with probability0.6; −₹10,000 with probability0.4। Probabilities given हैं।
- Step 1: Probabilities sum=0.6+0.4=1। E(π)=0.6(40,000)+0.4(−10,000)=₹20,000।
- Step 2: Loss की probability0.4=40%; expected positive profit इसे zero नहीं करती।
- Step 3: Advanced: variance=0.6(40,000−20,000)²+0.4(−10,000−20,000)²=60,00,00,000 rupees²।
- Step 4: Standard deviation=√600,000,000=10,000√6≈₹24,494.90। Given objective probabilities के कारण यह risk calculation है।
Final answer: Expected profit₹20,000; loss probability40%; SD≈₹24,494.90। Expected value कोई guaranteed payment नहीं।
Example 15: Profit margin, cost markup और capital return
Question: Annual TR₹2,00,000, annual total cost₹1,60,000, capital base₹4,00,000। सभी ratios उसी profit measure पर निकालें।
- Step 1: Annual profit=2,00,000−1,60,000=₹40,000।
- Step 2: Profit margin on sales=40,000/2,00,000×100=20%।
- Step 3: Markup on cost=40,000/1,60,000×100=25%।
- Step 4: Annual profit / given capital base=40,000/4,00,000×100=10%। Denominator बदलने से ratio बदलता है।
Final answer: Profit₹40,000; sales margin20%, cost markup25%, annual return on given capital base10%। Question में profit और capital की definitions follow करें।
