Revenue Theory
Syllabus link: uploaded UP PGT syllabus के “Cost and Revenue curves” को directly cover करता है; UGC NET Unit 1 के competitive/non-competitive markets और firm optimisation के लिए foundation व advanced extension देता है। ⭐ = high-priority concept, official weightage claim नहीं।
1. Basics: Total, Average और Marginal Revenue ⭐
Notation: Q = quantity actually sold, P = price per unit। यहाँ one period, one product और basic model में सभी units पर same price (uniform pricing) लिया गया है।
| Concept | Formula | Simple meaning |
|---|---|---|
Easy example: 10 notebooks ₹50 each में बिके → TR ₹500, AR ₹50।
Continuous MR: TR curve की tangent slope = dTR/dQ।
Continuous identity: dAR/dQ = (MR−AR)/Q।
2. Perfect Competition: firm के लिए P = AR = MR ⭐
Price-taking firm market price को given मानती है।
3. Downward demand: MR price
मानें 5 units ₹100 each → TR500।
TR(Q)=Q·P(Q)
MR=P(Q)+Q·P′(Q)
P′(Q)<0 और Q>0 ⇒ MR<P=AR।
Linear inverse demand: AR=P=a−bQ, a,b>0
TR=aQ−bQ²; MR=a−2bQ।
Linear graph rules: AR और MR का same vertical intercept a; MR की absolute slope 2b, AR की b। MR का quantity intercept a/(2b), AR का a/b।
4. Elasticity–Revenue relation: सबसे useful MCQ formula ⭐
Normal downward-sloping demand की signed price elasticity ε=(dQ/dP)(P/Q)<0 है।
Signed convention: MR=P(1+1/ε)
Reverse formula: E=P/(P−MR)=AR/(AR−MR)।
Conditions: uniform pricing, Q>0, P>0, differentiable downward demand; point elasticity और corresponding continuous MR।
Derivation: ε=(dQ/dP)(P/Q) ⇒ Q(dP/dQ)=P/ε।
|---|---|---|---|
| Elastic: E>1 | Positive | बढ़ती | TR बढ़ती |
| Unit elastic: E=1 | Zero | Point पर stationary | First-order change zero |
| Inelastic: 0<E<1 | Negative | घटती | TR घटती |
| Perfectly elastic: E→∞ | MR→P | Positive P में बढ़ती | Firm price-taking limit |
| Objective | Interior first-order condition | Local strict maximum test |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue max: maximise TR | MR=0 | TR″=MR′<0 |
| Profit max: maximise π=TR−TC | MR=MC | π″=MR′−MC′<0 |
Same model: P100−Q, TC100+20Q।
Uniform-price, single-product interior profit optimum में:
MR=MC ⇒ L=1/E।
MC>0 और E>1 में pricing formula: P=MC/(1−1/E)।
Demand अधिक elastic हो तो inverse-elasticity markup कम होता है, other conditions same।
6. Advanced theory: NET-level extensions
6.1 Constant-elasticity demand (Isoelastic)
P=A1/EQ−1/E
TR=A1/EQ1−1/E
MR=(1−1/E)P।
| Market / pricing | Revenue implication |
|---|---|
| Perfect competition: individual firm | P=AR=MR; given positive price में TR linear। |
| Uniform-price monopoly | Downward AR; MR<AR; choose Q using MR=MC, then P from AR। |
| Monopolistic competition | Differentiated product से own downward demand; standard uniform pricing में MR<AR। Long-run zero economic profit का मतलब zero revenue नहीं। |
| Perfect first-degree discrimination | हर incremental unit की willingness to pay collect होती है; continuous TR=∫₀Q P(x)dx और MR=P(Q)। AR=TR/Q average collected price है; last unit की price से generally अलग। |
6.3 Sweezy kinked demand: MR में gap
Given prevailing price पर firms मानती हैं कि price rise rivals follow नहीं करेंगे, इसलिए customers अधिक switch करेंगे: upper segment more elastic। Price cut rivals match करेंगे: lower segment less elastic। AR continuous kink बनाती है और MR discontinuous gap।
Graph में Q10, P60। Left MR limit50, right MR limit20। Kink पर ordinary derivative defined नहीं: left/right conditions MRleft≥MC≥MRright use करें।
6.4 Baumol Sales-Revenue Maximisation
Manager का objective sales revenue maximise करना हो सकता है, लेकिन minimum acceptable profit π̄ भी चाहिए: max TR(Q), subject to π(Q)≥π̄।
7. कौन, कब, कौन-सी book/publication? ⭐
Revenue theory किसी एक economist का single-year invention नहीं। नीचे contributions और first-publication years दिए हैं; later reprints को original year न समझें।

8. 16 Step-by-step Solved Examples
Example 1: Constant price: TR, AR, MR
- Step 1: TR=P×Q=40×15=600।
- Step 2: AR=600/15=40। Price unchanged है; TR(16)=40×16=640।
- Step 3: 16th-unit MR=640−600=40। Continuous MR=d(40Q)/dQ=40 भी है।
Final answer: TR₹600; AR₹40; MR₹40। Firm-level P=AR=MR।
- Step 1: TR list: 1×100=100; 2×90=180; 3×80=240; 4×70=280।
- Step 2: MR₁=100−0=100; MR₂=180−100=80; MR₃=240−180=60; MR₄=280−240=40।
- Step 3: Q4 पर AR=280/4=70; fourth-unit MR40<AR70। MR sum=100+80+60+40=280=TR4।
Final answer: TR: 100,180,240,280; MR: 100,80,60,40।
Example 3: ΔQ
- Step 1: ΔQ=25−20=5; ΔTR=1200−1000=200।
- Step 2: Average incremental revenue per extra unit = ΔTR/ΔQ=200/5=40।
Final answer: Interval MR₹40 per unit; total additional revenue₹200।
Example 4: Linear inverse demand
Question: P=100−2Q। Q10 पर TR, AR और continuous MR?
- Step 1: AR=P=100−2(10)=80। TR=PQ=80×10=800।
- Step 2: TR(Q)=100Q−2Q² → MR=100−4Q।
Final answer: TR₹800; AR₹80; continuous MR₹60।
Example 5: 10th unit बनाम Q10 का derivative
Question: Same TR=100Q−2Q² में 10th-unit discrete MR और point MR at Q10 compare करें।
- Step 1: TR(10)=800; TR(9)=900−162=738।
- Step 2: 10th-unit MR=800−738=62; यह interval 9→10 का exact change है।
- Step 3: Point derivative MR(10)=100−4(10)=60।
Final answer: Discrete MR₹62; continuous endpoint MR₹60।
- Step 1: TR=100Q−Q²; MR=100−2Q। MR0 ⇒ Q50।
- Step 2: TR″=−2<0; पूरे interval पर concave TR, इसलिए Q50 global maximum।
- Step 3: P=100−50=50; maximum TR=50×50=2500।
Final answer: Revenue-max Q50, P₹50, TR₹2,500; वहाँ E1।
Example 7: Elasticity से MR
Question: Uniform-price seller: P₹120 और positive elasticity magnitude E4। Continuous MR?
- Step 1: Magnitude convention है: MR=P(1−1/E)।
- Step 2: MR=120(1−1/4)=120×3/4=90।
Final answer: MR₹90। Price minus MR = ₹30, अर्थात P/E।
Example 8: AR और MR से elasticity
Question: Uniform price ₹90 और point MR₹30 है। Demand elasticity magnitude निकालें।
- Step 1: AR=P=90। E=AR/(AR−MR)।
- Step 2: E=90/(90−30)=90/60=1.5।
- Step 3: Check: 90(1−1/1.5)=30; demand elastic है।
Final answer: E=1.5; signed ε=−1.5।
Example 9: Signed elasticity में सही sign
Question: P₹150 और signed price elasticity ε=−3। MR?
Example 10: Large price change: TR और arc elasticity
Question: Price ₹100→₹90 होने पर Q50→65। Exact TR change और midpoint arc elasticity magnitude?
- Step 1: Old TR=100×50=5000; new TR=90×65=5850। Change850; percentage=850/5000=17%।
- Step 2: Midpoint Q=(50+65)/2=57.5; midpoint P=(100+90)/2=95।
- Step 3: E_arc=|(15/57.5)/(−10/95)|=57/23≈2.478।
- Step 4: Finite interval elastic है और price cut से exact TR बढ़ी। Arc E को endpoint derivative-MR formula में डालकर exact point MR claim न करें।
Final answer: TR₹850 अर्थात17% बढ़ी; midpoint arc E≈2.478।
Example 11: Revenue maximum बनाम profit maximum
Question: P=100−Q; TC=100+20Q। Revenue-max और profit-max outputs, prices और profits compare करें।
- Step 1: MR=100−2Q; MC20। Profit condition MR=MC ⇒ 100−2Q=20 ⇒ Q40। π″=−2<0।
- Step 2: At Q40: P60, TR2400, TC900, profit1500। Demand E=P/(P−MR)=60/40=1.5।
- Step 3: Revenue condition MR0 ⇒ Q50। At Q50: P50, TR2500, TC1100, profit1400।
Final answer: Profit max: Q40,P60,π1500। Revenue max: Q50,P50,TR2500,π1400।
Example 12: Lerner Index और दो markup percentages
Question: Uniform-price interior profit optimum में P₹80,E4। MC, Lerner share और cost-based markup?
- Step 1: L=1/E=1/4=0.25। इसलिए (80−MC)/80=0.25 ⇒ MC60।
- Step 2: Price-based share=(80−60)/80=25%।
- Step 3: Cost-based markup=(80−60)/60=1/3≈33.33%।
Final answer: MC₹60; Lerner index0.25 यानी25%; markup on MC33.33%।
Example 13: Isoelastic demand: nonlinear AR
Question: Q=10,000/P²।
- Step 1: Inverse demand P=100/√Q; E2 constant। MR=(1−1/2)P=P/2।

- Step 3: Q100: P10, TR10×100=1000; MR5।
Final answer: At Q25: P20,TR500,MR10। At Q100: P10,TR1000,MR5।
Example 14: MR से TR recover करें
Question: Continuous MR=60−4Q और TR(0)=0। TR,AR निकालें; Q5 पर values?
- Step 1: MR=dTR/dQ; integrate: TR=60Q−2Q²+C।
- Step 2: TR(0)=0 ⇒ C0। Q>0 पर AR=TR/Q=60−2Q।
- Step 3: Q5: TR300−50=250; AR50; MR60−20=40।
Final answer: TR=60Q−2Q²; AR=60−2Q। At Q5: TR250,AR50,MR40।
Example 15: Uniform price बनाम perfect discrimination
Question: Inverse willingness-to-pay P(Q)=100−Q। Q10 तक uniform pricing और perfect first-degree discrimination का TR,AR,continuous MR compare करें।
- Step 1: Uniform price: last-unit price90 सभी units पर। TR=90×10=900; AR90; MR=100−2Q=80।
- Step 2: Perfect discrimination: TR=∫₀¹⁰(100−x)dx=1000−50=950।
- Step 3: Discrimination AR=950/10=95; MR=P(10)=90।
Final answer: Uniform: TR900,AR90,MR80। Perfect discrimination: TR950,AR95,MR90।
Example 16: Baumol: binding minimum-profit constraint
Question: P=100−Q; TC=100+20Q। Sales revenue maximise करें, subject to profit≥₹1,464; feasible Q0 से100।
- Step 1: Profit=100Q−Q²−100−20Q=80Q−Q²−100=1500−(Q−40)²।
- Step 2: Requirement: 1500−(Q−40)²≥1464 ⇒ (Q−40)²≤36 ⇒ feasible Q34
- Step 4: At Q46: P54; TR54×46=2484; TC100+920=1020; profit1464। MR100−92=8>0; constraint binds।
Final answer: Constrained revenue-max Q46,P54,TR2484,π1464; MR8, zero
9. ⚠️ Exam Traps + Memory Tricks
- Revenue ≠ Profit: profit=TR−TC।
- AR=P condition: same price on all units; multi-price sales में AR weighted average है।
- MR का “extra”: नया unit price नहीं, total revenue का net change।
- Linear restriction: same intercept + double MR slope shortcut सिर्फ linear AR के लिए।
- Zero MR: TR stationary; second-order/sign/boundary check
- Discrete vs derivative: nth-unit MR=TR(n)−TR(n−1); point MR=dTR/dQ।
3 quick memory lines: “Total = P×Q; Average = Total/Q; Marginal = Total का change।” “Elastic–Extra revenue; Unit–Unchanged at point; Inelastic–Income घटे when Q rises।” “Revenue का R → MR0; Profit का cost साथी → MR=MC।”
