Factor Pricing

Syllabus connection: आपके uploaded UGC NET syllabus की Micro Economics unit में Factor Pricing है; UP PGT के Distribution Theory में Marginal Productivity Theory स्पष्ट रूप से है।

मानें output Q, labour L और other inputs fixed हैं।

Discrete: ΔQ/ΔL; smooth function: ∂Q/∂L Output per labour unit
APL: औसत उत्पाद (Average Product) प्रति labour unit average output: Q/L, L > 0 Output per labour unit
(Value of Marginal Product) P × MPL Money per labour unit
MRPL: सीमांत आगम उत्पाद (Marginal Revenue Product) Extra labour से extra total revenue। Continuous: dTR/dL = MR × MPL; discrete: ΔTR/ΔL Money per labour unit
MFCL: सीमांत साधन लागत (Marginal Factor Cost) Extra labour से extra total labour cost। Continuous: dTLC/dL; discrete: ΔTLC/ΔL। Money per labour unit
Money per labour unit
Memory trick:
MP = Product extra कितना?
VMP = Product को Price से multiply करो।
MRP = Product को Marginal Revenue से multiply करो।
MFC = Factor रखने की extra Cost कितनी?

Competitive product market: P = MR, इसलिए VMP = MRP।

पहले old TR और new TR निकालकर अंतर लें।

3. Hiring का master rule: MRP = MFC

π(L) = TR(L) − TLC(L) − other fixed costs
dπ/dL = MRPL − MFCL = 0
Local maximum की standard second-order check:
dMRP/dL − dMFC/dL < 0।

Discrete hiring: Workers पूरे numbers में हों और marginal net benefit लगातार घट रहा हो, तो last accepted unit का MRP ≥ MFC और next unit का MRP ≤ MFC देखें।

4. Marginal Productivity Theory

Assumption
Short run में other inputs और technology given MPL में change को labour variation से जोड़ें

Short run और long run

Diminishing marginal product और decreasing returns to scale एक ही बात नहीं हैं।

A. Individual firm: wage given है

Competitive labour market की एक छोटी firm given wage पर labour hire कर सकती है। इसलिए उसके सामने labour supply horizontal: w = AFCL = MFCL। Relevant downward MRP curve और wage line का intersection employment बताता है।

Individual firm: wage givenMRP=120−8L downward; wage और MFC ₹40। Employment10 पर intersection है।Individual firm: wage given₹ per labour unit020406080100120140051015MRP = 120−8LE (10,40)w = MFC = AFC = 40L: Labour units (employment)Rule: MRP=MFC; competitive labour market ⇒ MFC=w
Illustrative continuous model: MRP=120−8L और wage₹40।

B. Whole market: wage demand–supply

Whole labour market: demand + supplyMarket demand w=120−8L और supply w=20+2L, equilibrium L10 और wage40।

Demand shift vs movement: Wage बदलना given labour demand curve पर movement है। Product price, productive technology या other input quantities बदलें तो labour demand shift हो सकती है। Labour-augmenting improvement, other things given, MP

TLC = w(L)×L
MFC = w + L(dw/dL)।
Upward-sloping supply पर dw/dL > 0 ⇒ MFC > w।
MRP=MFC पर L40/3; wage140/3। Competitive comparison L20,w60।Monopsony: wage supply curve से पढ़ें₹ per labour unit020406080100120140160010203035MFC=20+4LSupply: w=20+2LMRP=100−2LMRP=MFCwm≈46.67wc=60L: Labour units (employment)Lm≈13.33, Lc=20; intersection height ≠ actual wage
Standard uniform-wage model: Lm=40/3, wage140/3। MFC की height220/3 है। Competitive intersection Lc=20,wc=60।

Product market Labour market Interior condition / usual positive-MP ordering
Perfect competition Perfect competition w = MFC = MRP = VMP
Downward-demand imperfect competition Perfect competition w = MFC = MRP < VMP
Perfect competition Uniform-wage monopsony, upward supply w < MFC = MRP = VMP
Downward-demand imperfect competition Uniform-wage monopsony, upward supply w < MFC = MRP < VMP

Robinson-type textbook gaps: VMP−MRP, product-market imperfection का gap है; MRP−w, monopsony wage gap है। Together: VMP−w = (VMP−MRP)+(MRP−w)।

Minimum wage और bilateral monopoly: NET extension

7. Advanced: elasticity, Euler और Cobb–Douglas shares

7.1 Monopsony में labour supply elasticity

Firm को मिलने वाली labour supply की elasticity εs = (dL/dw)×(w/L) हो। Positive quantities और smooth upward supply पर:

MFC = w(1 + 1/εs)
Interior optimum: MRP = w(1 + 1/εs)
w/MRP = εs/(1+εs)
(MRP−w)/MRP = 1/(1+εs)
(MRP−w)/w = 1/εs।

More elastic supply होने पर monopsony markdown छोटा होता है, other things given।

मानें differentiable production function Q=F(K,L), positive K,L और homogeneous degree ν है: F(tK,tL)=tνF(K,L)। तब Euler theorem:

K·MPK + L·MPL = νQ।
यदि factor payments P×MP हों:
rK+wL = νPQ।
Returns to scale ν Marginal-product payments का sum

Q = A KαLβ, A>0, K,L>0
MPK = αQ/K; MPL = βQ/L
अगर r=P·MPK, w=P·MPL:
Capital payment / revenue = α
Labour payment / revenue = β।

MPL/w = MPK/r
⇒ MRTSLK = MPL/MPK = w/r।

Economist / year Book / publication Contribution
J. H. von Thünen; 1850 का relevant भाग Der isolierte Staat / The Isolated State, labour–capital
Philip H. Wicksteed; 1894 An Essay on the Co-ordination of the Laws of Distribution Marginal-product distribution और product exhaustion का mathematical coordination
John Bates Clark; 1899 The Distribution of Wealth: A Theory of Wages, Interest and Profits Competitive marginal productivity distribution का systematic exposition
Joan Robinson; 1933 The Economics of Imperfect Competition Imperfect competition, monopsony और labour payment gaps का analysis

Memory chain: Thünen early foundation → Wicksteed 1894 mathematical coordination → Clark 1899 systematic distribution → Robinson 1933 imperfect markets।

⚠️ Year trap: Clark की online 1908 edition देख कर मूल पुस्तक का year 1908 मत लिखें—first publication 1899 है।

10. 14 numericals: step by step

Labour L Total output Q
0 0
1 20
2 36
3 48
4 56
5 60
  2. Step 2: MP तीसरी unit = (48−36)/(3−2)=12 output units।
  3. Step 3: AP at L=3 = 48/3=16 output units per labour unit।

Final answer: MP=12; AP=16

Example 2: VMP, MRP और hiring incentive

  1. Step 1: VMP = P×MP = 12×7 = ₹84।
  2. Step 2: MRP = MR×MP = 9×7 = ₹63।
  3. Step 3: Competitive labour market में MFC=w=₹60। Extra net gain = 63−60=₹3।

Final answer: VMP=₹84; MRP=₹63; marginal gain=₹3

Example 3: Discrete workers: exact equality

Question: दी table में product price ₹10 fixed, wage ₹100 per worker और other costs zero हैं।

Labour L Total output Q
0 0
1 20
2 36
3 48
4 56
5 60
  1. Step 1: पहले MP निकालें: 20,16,12,8,4। Price constant इसलिए MRP=VMP=200,160,120,80,40।
  3. Step 3: Total profit हर L पर: 10Q−100L। L=0,1,2,3,4,5 पर क्रमशः ₹0,100,160,180,160,100।
  4. Step 4: Maximum ₹180 at L=3।

Final answer: L=3; profit=₹180

P=₹10, wage=₹120, other costs zero।

Labour L Total output Q
0 0
1 20
2 36
3 48
4 56
5 60
  2. Step 2: L=2: revenue=₹360; labour cost=₹240; profit=₹120।
  3. Step 3: L=3: revenue=₹480; labour cost=₹360; profit=₹120।

Example 5: Continuous competitive hiring

Question: MRP=120−8L; market wage ₹40 और firm factor-price taker है। Continuous optimal L कितना है?

  1. Step 1: MFC=w=40। Master rule MRP=MFC लगाएँ।
  2. Step 2: 120−8L=40 ⇒ 8L=80 ⇒ L=10।
  3. Step 3: Second-order check: d(MRP−MFC)/dL=−8<0; इसलिए strict local maximum।

Final answer: L*=10; MRP=MFC=₹40

Example 6: Product-market power: TR से MRP निकालें

Question: Q=8L, inverse demand P=30−Q, competitive wage ₹112 और other costs zero।

  1. Step 1: TR=P×Q=30Q−Q²; MR=dTR/dQ=30−2Q। MP=dQ/dL=8।
  2. Step 2: MRP=8(30−2×8L)=240−128L। MFC=w=112।
  3. Step 3: 240−128L=112 ⇒ L=1; Q=8; P=22 और MR=14। Second derivative of profit=−128<0; candidate feasible है।
  4. Step 4: VMP=22×8=₹176; MRP=14×8=₹112=w। Revenue=₹176, wage bill=₹112; profit=₹64।

Final answer: L=1; VMP=₹176; MRP=w=₹112; profit=₹64

Question: Uniform wage supply w=20+2L।

  1. Step 1: At L=10: wage=20+2×10=₹40; TLC=40×10=₹400।
  2. Step 2: General TLC=(20+2L)L=20L+2L²। Continuous MFC=dTLC/dL=20+4L; L=10 पर ₹60।
  3. Step 3: Exact integer change: L=11 पर wage ₹42, TLC=42×11=₹462। Extra cost=462−400=₹62।

Final answer: w=₹40; TLC=₹400; derivative MFC=₹60; finite extra cost=₹62

Example 8: Monopsony: पहले L, फिर wage

Question: Continuous MRP=100−2L, supply wage w=20+2L।

  2. Step 2: 100−2L=20+4L ⇒ 6L=80 ⇒ Lm=40/3≈13.33।
  3. Step 3: Actual wage supply से: wm=20+2×40/3=140/3≈₹46.67।
  4. Step 4: Slope check: d(MRP−MFC)/dL=−6<0। Competitive comparison में MRP=w ⇒100−2L=20+2L ⇒Lc=20,wc=₹60।

Final answer: Lm=40/3; wm=₹140/3; MFC=MRP=₹220/3

  1. Step 1: ₹50 wage पर available labour: 50=20+2L ⇒ L=15।
L=15 पर left marginal net gain=70−50=20>0; right=70−80=−10<0।

Final answer: L=15; wage=₹50; employment

  1. Step 1: MFC=w(1+1/εs)=80(1+1/4)=₹100। Interior optimum पर MRP=MFC=₹100।
  2. Step 2: Monopsony gap=100−80=₹20।
  3. Step 3: MRP के सापेक्ष gap=20/100=1/5=20%। Wage के सापेक्ष gap=20/80=1/4=25%।
  4. Step 4: Check: w/MRP=80/100=4/5=εs/(1+εs)।

Final answer: MRP=MFC=₹100; gap/MRP=20%; gap/w=25%

Example 11: Cobb–Douglas से wage और factor shares

Question: Q=K^0.4 L^0.6; K=L=100, product price P=₹10। Competitive marginal-product payments के benchmark में w,r और total factor payments क्या हैं?

MP_L=0.6Q/L=0.6; MP_K=0.4Q/K=0.4।
  2. Step 2: w=P×MP_L=10×0.6=₹6; r=P×MP_K=₹4।
  3. Step 3: Labour bill=wL=₹600; capital-service bill=rK=₹400। Revenue=PQ=₹1000।
  4. Step 4: Labour share=600/1000=0.6 और capital share=0.4।

Final answer: w=₹6; r=₹4; labour share60%; capital share40%

  1. Step 1: Revenue=PQ=₹200। Euler से total factor payments=νPQ।
  2. Step 2: ν=0.8 ⇒payments=₹160; revenue minus payments=₹40।
  3. Step 3: ν=1 ⇒payments=₹200; residual=0। ν=1.2 ⇒payments=₹240; payment deficit=₹40।

Final answer: Payments: ₹160,₹200,₹240; full exhaustion

Question: MP_L=12, MP_K=8, w=₹6, r=₹4।

  1. Step 1: Market equilibrium:200−2w=3w−50 ⇒250=5w ⇒w=₹50।
  2. Step 2: Employment demand=200−100=100; supply=150−50=100।
  3. Step 3: छोटी wage-taking firm को यही wage given मिलेगी; उसके लिए AFC=MFC=w=₹50 और supply horizontal है।

Question में clue Rule Exam trap
Extra revenue MRP=dTR/dL; continuous MR×MP Finite change में direct ΔTR check
Competitive factor market MFC=w; hire where MRP=w Product competition
दोनों markets competitive w=MRP=VMP MP physical है; wage monetary
Uniform-wage monopsony MRP=MFC से L; supply से w MFC height को wage न कहें
Supply elasticity εs MFC=w(1+1/εs) Gap denominator
Product exhaustion Euler; CRS पर sum=PQ केवल diminishing MP पर्याप्त नहीं
Cobb–Douglas factor shares Competitive benchmark में factor का exponent Letter order बदल सकता है
Equal MP/price ratios Interior cost minimum की condition अकेले profit maximum नहीं
⭐ सबसे important: MP vs AP; VMP vs MRP; MRP=MFC; firm vs market supply; monopsony wage; Euler/CRS; Cobb–Douglas shares; Clark–Wicksteed–Robinson के years/books।
