Syllabus scope /
यह सामग्री उपलब्ध अपलोडेड UGC NET Economics, Code 01 और UP PGT Economics, Code 11 syllabus पर आधारित है। NET Unit 1 में “Theory of Production and Costs”; PGT में “Production function, Laws of returns & Returns to Scale, Cobb-Douglas production function” तथा “Cost and Revenue curves” दिए हैं।
Common core: production function, short/long run, product curves, laws of returns, returns to scale, Cobb–Douglas और cost linkage.
1. Production function /
A technical relationship between inputs and maximum feasible output, given technology.
Same ovens में workers बढ़ाना short-run change; ovens और workers दोनों बढ़ाना long-run adjustment है।
| Point | Short run / अल्पकाल | Long run / दीर्घकाल |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs | At least one fixed | All variable |
| Simple form | Q=f(L,K̄) | Q=f(L,K) |
| Main law | Variable proportions | Returns to scale |
| Time meaning | Input adjustment constraint | No fixed calendar duration |
2. TP, AP और MP / Product measures
| Measure | Meaning / अर्थ | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| TP: Total product | कुल physical output | TP=Q |
| APL: Average product | प्रति labour unit output | APL=Q/L, L>0 |
| MPL: Marginal product | अतिरिक्त labour से extra output, other inputs fixed | ΔQ/ΔL; smooth case ∂Q/∂L |
Mini calculation: L=4 पर Q=32; L=5 पर Q=39. MP of fifth worker=7; AP at L=5=39/5=7.8.
- MP rising ⇒ TP rises at an increasing rate; MP positive but falling ⇒ TP rises at a decreasing rate.
- TP का smooth interior maximum: MP=0 with positive-to-negative sign change.
- MP>AP ⇒ AP rises; MP<AP ⇒ AP falls; AP का usual interior maximum: MP=AP.
“TP top → MP zero; AP top → MP equals AP.”
Graph reading: Illustrative Q=6L²−0.4L³, K fixed. Shown curves are a teaching example, not empirical data.
3. Law of variable proportions /
Diminishing marginal returns: given other inputs and technology, additional units of an input eventually yield smaller marginal additions to output.
Assumptions: technology unchanged; fixed input genuinely fixed; variable input units comparable in quality; input proportions adjustable. “Eventually diminishing MP” मुख्य बात है; हर technology में initial increasing-MP phase या negative-MP phase अनिवार्य नहीं है।
| Stage | Range in standard case | MCQ clue |
|---|---|---|
| I / प्रथम | Origin to AP maximum; AP rises | MP>AP; MP may rise then fall |
| II / द्वितीय | AP maximum to TP maximum | Interior: 0<MP<AP; 0<EL<1 |
| III / तृतीय | Beyond TP maximum | MP<0; TP falls |
4. Returns to scale /
Same technology पर सभी inputs एक ही proportion में बढ़ाएँ: t>1, compare f(tL,tK) with t f(L,K).
| Type | Condition | Inputs double example |
|---|---|---|
Along a ray, equally spaced output isoquants
⭐ Most important comparison: variable proportions = one input changes, others fixed; returns to scale = all inputs scaled proportionately. Q=√(LK) has diminishing MPL at fixed K and CRS. Q=L0.7K0.6 has diminishing own MPs and IRS.
Memory trick: “एक बदले → proportions; सब साथ बदलें → scale.”
Isoquant: same Q देने वाले L,K combinations. Positive marginal products वाले economic region में isoquant downward sloping; higher-output isoquants lie northeast under monotonic technology; distinct isoquants do not intersect. Convexity means diminishing MRTS, and is a standard substitutable-technology assumption, not a universal property.
MRTSLK ≡ −dK/dL = MPL/MPK (positive magnitude)
Along a convex isoquant, moving right uses more L and less K; the absolute slope generally falls.
| Technology | Isoquant | Substitution |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth Cobb–Douglas, positive exponents | Convex, downward sloping | σ=1 |
| Linear: Q=aL+bK, a,b>0 | Straight; MRTS=a/b | Perfect substitutes; σ=∞ (limit) |
| Leontief: Q=min(L/a,K/b) | L-shaped; kink L=aQ,K=bQ | Fixed proportions; σ=0 (convention) |
Economically relevant region में दोनों MPs positive रहते हैं; outside it an input can have negative MP. Not every technology has finite ridge lines; positive-exponent Cobb–Douglas has positive MPs throughout L,K>0.
Intercepts: L=C/w; K=C/r; slope=−w/r
w=wage per labour unit; r=capital rental price. Fixed input prices पर C बढ़े तो parallel outward shift; only w बढ़े, C,r fixed हों, तो K-intercept unchanged, L-intercept falls और line steeper होती है।
Target Q की smooth interior least-cost choice:
Per rupee marginal output equal करें. Suitable convexity of input requirement sets
Worked example: Q=√(LK), target Q=4, w=r=2. At E=(4,4), MRTS=K/L=1=w/r. Minimum cost=2×4+2×4=16; isocost K=8−L.
- If MPL/w>MPK/r: local fixed-output cost घटाने के लिए more L, less K.
π=pQ−wL−rK; price-taking interior FOCs: pMPL=w and pMPK=r, plus sufficient curvature/global checks.
7. Important production functions /
7.1 Cobb–Douglas ⭐ Core for both exams
MPL=αQ/L; MPK=βQ/K
EL=α; EK=β; MRTSLK=(α/β)(K/L)
- α+β: degree h; >1 IRS, =1 CRS, <1 DRS. σ=1 regardless of h.
- Own diminishing MPs: 0<α<1 gives diminishing MPL; 0<β<1 gives diminishing MPK. These conditions alone do not determine RTS.
- Optimal input ratio: K/L=βw/(αr); assumes positive prices and interior cost minimisation.
- A: multiplicative efficiency parameter. Raising A increases output at fixed inputs; Hicks-neutral improvement leaves MRTS at a given input ratio unchanged.
- Shares: α and β equal factor payments/revenue shares under price-taking interior marginal-product payment. Their interpretation as shares summing to one additionally needs CRS; they are always output elasticities within this function.
Example: Q=2L0.6K0.3 ⇒ labour elasticity 0.6; capital elasticity 0.3; h=0.9 ⇒ DRS; σ=1; both own MPs diminish.
7.2 Linear and fixed proportions
Linear: Q=aL+bK. Compare unit-output costs w/a and r/b. Lower one wins; equal costs permit multiple optimal mixes. Leontief: Q=min(L/a,K/b), a,b>0. Efficient bundle L=aQ,K=bQ; C(Q)=(wa+rb)Q. Surplus of only one input does not increase output.
7.3 CES / Constant elasticity of substitution — NET advanced
A,ν>0; 0<δ<1; ρ>−1, ρ≠0
σ=1/(1+ρ); homogeneity degree=ν
ν controls RTS; ρ controls substitution; δ is a distribution/weight parameter, not generally an invariant labour income share. ρ→0 ⇒ A LνδKν(1−δ); ρ→∞ with ν=1 ⇒ A min(L,K); ρ→−1 with ν=1 ⇒ weighted linear technology.
8. Economists, year and publication /
| Economist | Publication, first year | Production-related association |
|---|---|---|
| David Ricardo | On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, 1817 | Land, rent and diminishing-return reasoning; not the sole originator of the general law |
| Alfred Marshall | Principles of Economics, 1890 | Production, organisation and internal/external economies |
| Charles W. Cobb & Paul H. Douglas | “A Theory of Production,” American Economic Review, 1928, pp. 139–165 | Cobb–Douglas empirical production formulation; a paper, not a book |
| J. R. Hicks | The Theory of Wages, 1932 | Elasticity of substitution and induced innovation |
| Wassily Leontief | The Structure of American Economy, 1919–1929: An Empirical Application of Equilibrium Analysis, 1941 | Input–output analysis; fixed-coefficient production tradition |
| K. J. Arrow, H. B. Chenery, B. S. Minhas & R. M. Solow | “Capital-Labor Substitution and Economic Efficiency,” Review of Economics and Statistics, 1961, pp. 225–250 | CES; remember ACMS |
Memory ladder: Ricardo 1817 → Marshall 1890 → Cobb–Douglas 1928 → Hicks 1932 → Leontief 1941 → ACMS 1961.
9. Production–cost links /
With only labour variable, constant w, and MPL>0:
MC=w/MPL • AVC=w/APL
⭐ MP maximum → MC minimum; AP maximum → AVC minimum. Falling positive MP → rising MC. MC intersects AVC and AC at their smooth interior minima; fixed cost shifts AC but does not affect MC. AFC falls as Q rises; AC−AVC=AFC.
Graph example: TC=18+18Q−6Q²+Q³. AVC=18−6Q+Q²; MC=18−12Q+3Q². At Q=3: AVC=MC=9. AC minimum occurs later (about Q=3.67), where MC=AC. Cost curves shown are illustrative.
Scale vs economies: RTS is physical technology; economies of scale means LRAC falls. With freely scalable homogeneous technology degree h and constant input prices, C(Q)=cQ1/h: IRS→falling LRAC; CRS→constant LRAC; DRS→rising LRAC. If factor prices vary with scale, declining LRAC need not prove technological IRS.
10. NET advanced toolkit /
Homogeneity, homotheticity and Euler
Homogeneous degree h: f(tL,tK)=thf(L,K). Homothetic: a strictly increasing transformation of a homogeneous function; isoquant slopes depend on input ratios, while RTS can change with output. Homogeneous ⇒ homothetic; converse जरूरी नहीं।
Scale elasticity Es=EL+EK=h (homogeneous case)
Marginal-product payment में total factor payment hQ (output units); h=1 पर product exhaustion, h<1 पर residual (1−h)Q, h>1 पर payments exceed Q. This identity alone does not establish competitive equilibrium under IRS.
Substitution elasticity and concavity
Diminishing each own MP ≠ joint concavity. For Q=ALαKβ, α,β>0: h<1 implies strictly concave; h=1 concave but not strictly along rays; h>1 not concave although isoquants remain convex. Q=L0.8K0.8 is the key counterexample.
Conditional factor demand: worked model
Given Q, more expensive labour reduces L*. For general Cobb–Douglas, fixed Q,r: ∂ln L*/∂ln w=−β/(α+β). Profit optimum may fail to be finite: under CRS, if p exceeds minimum unit cost, unrestricted scale makes profit unbounded; if equal, every least-cost scale has zero profit.
11. ⚠️ Exam traps /
- MP falling ≠ TP falling: TP falls only when MP<0.
- AP max ≠ TP max: first MP=AP; second MP=0.
- Stage I ≠ increasing-MP phase: MP can fall before AP peaks.
- CRS ≠ constant partial MP: inputs jointly scale vs one input changes.
- α+β controls RTS; σ controls substitution. Cobb–Douglas σ=1 even when α+β≠1.
- Tangency ≠ automatic profit maximum: target-output cost choice and output choice are separate.
- Axes matter: L horizontal ⇒ isoquant slope −MPL/MPK; isocost slope −w/r.
- Convex isoquant ≠ concave production function: h>1 Cobb–Douglas is a counterexample.
- Exact vs approximate: doubling all inputs in degree h gives 2hQ, not 2hQ; small growth rates may use elasticity approximation.
- Technology movement vs shift: more inputs moves on a given function; technical improvement shifts it. Same-Q isoquant moves inward.
12. Final revision table /

| TP maximum | MP=0; slope changes + to − |
| AP maximum | MP=AP; EL=1 |
| Stage II interior | 0<MP<AP; 0<EL<1 |
| Least-cost interior | MPL/w=MPK/r |
| Cobb–Douglas | EL=α; EK=β; h=α+β; σ=1 |
| Leontief vs linear | Kink, σ=0 vs straight, σ=∞ |
| CES negative exponent | σ=1/(1+ρ); h=ν |
| Euler | LMPL+KMPK=hQ |
| Cost link, constant w | MC=w/MP; AVC=w/AP |
| Scale vs own returns | All proportionately vs one with others fixed |
